This is mainly for Denise, but I'm posting a thread because I like to encourage people to use college dental schools - when possible.

Denise, awhile back you posted a thread asking about dental insurance. I recall advising you to forget about dental insurance and do some homework to try to find a college dental school to get your work done. Hope you made some progress.

I've been going to Ohio State University dental school for many years. Ihe services are excellent and they are soooooo nice!! Over the past 10 yrs I've had root canals, fillings, crowns, crown lengthening, and now I only have to get cleanings every 6 months (x-rays every 12-18 months). In that sense, I'm fortunate to live in a city where the 3rd largest state university in the US is located. They also do orthodonture, implants, dentures, pediatric dentistry, various surgeries. I especially like the fact that the students (with supervision) regularly go to schools to teach kids dental hygiene and give free cleanings.

Today I had an appt for an exam and cleaning. I don't have dental insurance....I pay out of pocket. The hygienist always has to call an instructor over to take a look at things, and also a staff dentist gives final approval. I had a very thorough exam, review if health history, periodontic exam, very thorough cleaning. I was there from 8:30 until 11:00.

My total today was $67. :) (Normally it would have been $93 but the staff dentist remembered me from a couple yrs ago, we chatted about the student who did most of my repair work, I guess I schmoozed a bit......:D......and he said not to charge me for his exam.) PLUS I always get a "goody bag" - free toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, mouth rinse, and proxy brushes (good for cleaning between teeth, esp molars).

Wow, really nice AC!! Thank you, and I did find a Dental School in San Francisco. Only problem I had was it is 350 miles or so, from where I live. Long story short, I have some other health issues that were weighing so heavy on me I chose to get the tooth pulled. The dentist was excellent, but I can't see her permanently. The clinic is not taking new patients.

Thank you for the post AC, I hope others, if they need it, will consider the Dental Universities, they are wonderful as I used to go to the Oregon Health Sciences University when I was living near Portland. I don't think you can beat their health or dental care honestly. Just my opinion, but I did make it down for x-rays, and had people all around me and I didn't feel like a "number" if you know what I mean.
