Is this forum becoming dictatorial, reigned in by those who seem to be absolutely "right" and seem to have the right answers for everything!
I must admit being a teeny weeny ENVIOUS of those on this forum with superior intellects, and that we-mere mortals-by contrast seem dumb and inferior! :yesmaster:

I've been feeling sort of the same way as Susie. I posted it as hearing so much hate here lately, but Susie's title works for me too.

(Just between you and me, Susie, some of those "intellects" you mentioned aren't ... well ... necessarily ... any more superior than the rest of us!)

Well, everyone is entitled to their opinion but do you mean that they should have more open minds? Or what do you mean? I don't get it. I am feeling dumb right now.

I admit to a certain confusion also. Would someone care to clarify?

I'll go along with that too. We all don't read the same threads, so maybe something goes on in other categories. For myself, I have found this place to be incredibly civil. Warri, Shali and I have been at opposite ends on a few things and I count them as good and valued friends. Sorry that you are upset. You may have something to complain about. I hope its not that the posts are too "intelligent". We really need some specifics.

Of course, I should be providing concrete examples, but wouldn't I be indirectly hurting people's feelings; after all we are mainly participating in these exchanges for fun and entertainment.
Can you come up with a good example?

Unpack means that there seems to be some hidden meaning in your post. I understand all the words that you have used but I don't understand what you are getting at. I need some context to get your drift.

It is my position that everyone has something to offer in any discussion and anything that causes members to feel that they are being silenced or made to feel dumb and inferior needs to be recognised and addressed. However, I really don't know what you are talking about because you seem to be hinting, rather than explaining. I do see that some others have understood your post but I really need help in that regard.

It would be a pretty dull world if everyone agreed with everyone else on everything. The "Trick" is to keep any opposing opinions civil. Insults and sarcasm just harden peoples opinions.

Well who would that be Falcon? Don't worry, I'm pretty sure I can guess who you're talking about. What I've found in my several years of experience in online comment forums, is that the minute someone starts pointing out the inconsistencies in others statements or ideologies, it rarely ever causes introspection on the part of the listeners. More often it turns to attacking the one who points out the inconsistencies. I guess the best that can be said is 'that's human nature'.

One of my hero's is Captain Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd and the thing he said that just does it for me was the following: The captain of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has been putting himself between whales and harpoon ships for more than 30 years, preventing the killing of countless cetaceans. He’s been called a terrorist, a greater threat than Al-Qaeda, a liar. None of it bothers him.“I am here to say things people do not want to hear and do things people do not want to see. I am here to piss people off – that is my job,” the 59-year-old Watson says in Ron Colby’s 2008 documentary Pirate for the Se

I admire his devotion and commitment to compassionate coexistence with the animals that share this planet with us.

I don't want to piss people off for the sake of pissing them off. It takes as much out of me emotionally and mentally as it does those who might feel 'put upon' by my statements. But when I see something that just ain't right (political scheming at the expense of others, suffering on the part of the helpless, terrorism of others who have no voice (human or animals)) I am compelled to speak up and point out the lies and the violence and inconsistency. If people are made uncomfortable perhaps that's an indicator that they should be looking to their own belief systems and seeing if the problem is actually more personal.

I believe in introspection, uncomfortable to be sure, but essential for growth. I don't believe, however, that we need to resort to ridicule to prove a point. Shaming each other is cruel. That, IMHO, is a form of verbal terrorism.

998.jpgI've been on and dropped off of several forums where people flamed each other to mere ashes. Especially political discussions...but even something as simple as mentioning Cesar Milan or Alpo on the wrong dog site...ALPO??? OH SURE OBVIOUSLY YOU ARE TRYING TO KILL YOUR DOG...<<<and that's from a moderator>>>yehoots. SF doesn't get anywhere that out of hand.

IMHO it's up to the reader to pick their topics or not. I mean if you see a topic that you know is going to make steam come from your ears, don't read it...quite simple. If someone posted a thread about what a great guy Cruz is I wouldn't bother...arguing that I feel he's a prize piece of feminine hygiene equipment isn't going to change anyone's mind. Really this forum is far more civil than most.

None of it will matter in 1,000 years anyway. Meanwhile, to paraphrase one of my favorite literary characters, "I believe the wind has blown down some very juicy apples at the other end of the orchard." In other words, I believe there are a lot better things to do on other forums on this BB, so let's go play some fun games!

I'm off to start a new one! Give me a couple of minutes and then come see if you can play along!

Thank you, W., for your beautifully written comment.
My example is only "so-so", listed under Gun Collectors, Owners, and Enthusiasts.
Beginning, middle, and end totally devoted to
pictures of guns, no discussion of any kind about ingrained gun culture.
Is it therefore assumed that the reader must or should approve of "guns"?
Would you consider this 'dictatorial' or not?

Susie, if you find my one out of the over 19,000 threads on this forum dictatorial, you're entitled to your opinion. I find it interesting that you're so concerned with that particular one, and take such issue with it. It was specifically created by request, talk of guns in other threads here brought much disrespect to gun owners to the point of insults and name calling by the anti-gun people.

That thread is under the Hobbies section, because gun collecting, shooting, etc. are hobbies enjoyed by many Americans. You're correct, the thread is specifically dedicated to those who own, shoot and approve of guns. The entire thread can be pictures and information, it doesn't matter.

There are many threads here which discuss the ingrained gun culture by those who don't approve of guns. if you don't like those threads either, you are always welcome to start one of your own.
