Did my income tax yesterday....

I looked at the tax credits. Even with them the cost of the windows greatly exceed any possible savings for well over a decade. I think if one want to save energy, reduce the carbon footprint and stay warmer (or cooler) there are probably better ways to spend the money.

Last week I did my taxes using the H & R Block Deluxe w/State like I always do. But I was just familiarizing myself with my new computer and using Windows, which I haven't used in over 15 years. My TV was being used as the monitor and I had to keep readjusting the screen size. That caused me to miss something and I erroneously bypassed the beginning of the error check feature after the third time, trying to save some time. The IRS rejected my return for the first time ever! 😱Turns out I missed the box where I was supposed to put my AGI.

Due to the screen issues, I did not see the box for that. I finally fiddled around until I figured out how to get to it. The IRS and State accepted my returns (the state will not accept a return that the feds reject). I always have to pay...this year $174. I get a $50 Homesteader's rebate from the state, which is really only$29 because it costs $21 to file the state taxes.

When I told my grandson about the issues with using the TV as a monitor and since he also does his taxes using that program, he said he would give me the monitor he's had for years, which was still in the box. It's for gamers and has some fancy features which I'm still learning but at least now we can view the tax program as it should be. It's amazing what a difference it has made.

You might also look to see whether your TV has a setting for game consoles or computers or a way to select "direct" input to avoid the overscan used for television and movie inputs.

You got a new monitor and a helpful grandson out of it. Thats better than the love of the IRS.

It sure is Brookswood! And as I always say..."It pays to talk to people". And he was so adorable, wanting to make sure he put it together securely At first I couldn't find the Philips head screwdriver and he said a pointy knife just wouldn't do. :)

I got all the info I needed to e-file my income tax so I got it done yesterday (with Free Tax USA).

My late husband and I had to do a lot of remodeling and repairs on this house and part of that ($80,000 expense) was all new windows, insulation, and exterior doors. That totaled around $23,000. Of that, I got a credit of $184. I shouldn't be ungrateful, but...holy cow! What a rip :(

Just wanted to vent.
But if you put new windows and insulation in, think how much money you'll save over the next few years from your heat not leaking out! We put triple glazed windows in last year and our furnace was on 1/3 as often this winter! And the insulation we added the year before, made last summer's heat easy-peasy to get through. We were amazed at how much cooler our house was just because of that. So think about what you won't be paying for. this year! Wasted heat and air conditioning costs!

We had all our windows replaced in 2020 to the tune of $22,000. I never knew there was any tax deduction associated with it so I never filed. Sounds like it wouldn't have been worth it anyway.
It must be different in the USA. In Canada, until recently,we could have our house tested for permeability first, then we selected triple glazed windows with a silver coating on the insides of the glass (to reflect heat back) and the result was a $5000 rebate towards the cost of them.

Well, so much for getting a jump on this . . .:whistle::cautious: Once again, TaxAct locks me out since we do not have cell service at our house to receive a code texted to me. But my daughter's phone will work off our internet so I can get in. (My wife's older smart phone can not) This is my last year with TaxAct as this will be my last year filing Schedule C and using their most expensive option. But since I used TaxAct last year, it makes it easy to use again.

It amazes me that TaxAct is willing to lose customers that way.
