Oh yes, my aunt had a well. I remember that dipper hanging from a rope near the well .It was green and white metal and even had rust spots. Once they got water coming to the house we got fancy and drank from the hose. lol
Great grandparents had no running water and so a well bucket sat on the kitchen counter with a ladle beside, and when you were thirsty, you ladled yourself a little water and drank right from the ladle, as did everyone wanting a drink.
Yes, we had a well and pump out behind the house. My grandfather preferred the water from that for drinking and cooking over the piped-iin city water. Given the materials used in early water pipes, grandpa may have done us a big favor.
This fountain in my town, standing in front of the Rådhus, has been providing drinking water since before Columbus set sail to "discover" the outside world. The water tastes good but I'd never drink from a communal bucket if there was one.
We only had well water in Alberta .. no tap water at all. My big sisters were always afraid I would fall into the well. It felt like a luxury when we moved to B.C. the first time having a hot bath in a tub at 8 yrs. old.
I don't drink from a "bucket". but I drink well water pretty much every day when I'm outdoors doing chores. We have a water softener for our indoor uses, but drinking some water out of the hose, straight from the well, is my favorite. It's the best water I've ever had.
First of all, that little girl is an absolute angel.
Second, I once took a trip to central NY as a guest of a couple who owned a small ranch. They owned two wells one of which was an open spout where the water flowed into a stream. I drank some of that water and could not believe how cool, crisp, and tasty the water was. How I wish I could afford to live out in the country and drink that type of well water every day. How lucky country folks are!!
I love my deep well water. But, I carry a tin cup with me when I'm working in my lower meadow so I can savor the cold clear water that comes from my spring.
