Did You Ever Find a Movie Too Disturbing to Watch?

I read the book first too. I just could not watch the movie. I haven't tried watching it in decades. Maybe I should try again. Who knows? It might seem funny to me now.
I just searched it out in my collection and finished watching it 5 minutes ago. I had no disturbing reaction to it at all. Just a visceral experience of a good thriller. But there is nothing funny about it. Absurd maybe, but not funny absurd. I had forgotten the coming down the stairs backwards scene, as if I have never seen it, but it's very short, probably two seconds. You could miss it if you blinked.

Partly, I'm older now, and probably more realistic. I'm no longer curious about the accuracy of religious beliefs. 50 years ago, my doors to all beliefs were still open. I heard there was some polling done to peoples' reactions' to the film. Atheists and deep believers were least affected, but those in the unsure category had reactions similar to mine. I never read the poll. It was just relayed to me by someone who did. I believe the book was written by a former priest, so it may have reflected some of the thinking of the time, if it was only loosely.

'Fargo" and the human in the branch and tree shredder really makes me wonder what it takes for someone to even think up such a scene.

But thankfully I have fast forward so I can watch Frances McDormand, she is an awesome actress and I love her "Don't cha know..." accent. She is hilarious as her facial expressions are perfect.

I would have been in the unsure catagory at that time too. I believe the Catholic church still believes in exorcism, but I may be mistaken. I am going to see if I can find it streaming anywhere and watch it again just out of curiosity. I wonder if my reaction will be different.

When I saw it in the theater, I sat in the middle of the middle section of seats. All of the seats around me filled in before the movie started, and I was kind of trapped. Midway in the movie, I would have walked out at one point, but being boxed in, I would have to make a scene getting out, and I imagined everyone laughing at me, so I toughed it out, and that got me through the whole film.

lol

That thing about Jeff Dahmer on Netflix that starts off with that women in her living room hearing the sound of cuting and sawing from the apartment next door. I couldn't get past 5 minutes of that before I felt like up chucking and turned it off.

I like scary but not bloody gore as that is just nasty not scary , not well written which is why SAW after 15 minutes had enough but did find first Halloween scary .
I'm the same, @NotCompSavy. I've noticed that the first Halloween movie actually has almost no blood.

I love scary movies but steer clear of gore; for that reason I've never even attempted to watch Saw, Terrifier, Hostel, or anything that looks like it may have torture and/or gore.

I watched a movie called Megan Is Missing about a year ago that was so disturbing it bothers me to this day. It's too awful to describe, so if anyone is curious I'll let you Google it. Ugh. I wish I could just wipe it from my memory.

One movie I couldn't get through was the original Last House on the Left. That's another one I wish I could eradicate from my brain. I've heard it was based on The Virgin Spring, which @Warrigal mentioned.
