Did you ever know someone with absolutely no sense of humor?

I know a few. Can't joke around with them - they take everything so seriously or personally. If you try to tella funny story, they say "I don't get it." or "I see it, but still don't think it's very funny." I wonder what makes people like that?

I've read some about that. The consensus seems to be it's partly genetic and partly what/who you were exposed to when you were young---if they joked around a lot or not.

That seems to be the explanation for a lot of things, though, so who knows. :)

I think that everybody has a sense of humor but not everybody has the ability to tap into it.

I also think that many people just don't respond to humor from people that they are not 100% comfortable with. I think that people today are more concerned about staying neutral/PC on every issue and much of what passes for humor these days is at another person or groups expense.

Here is one of my "riddles": Why did the deer hunter shop very carefully for a new gun? Because he wanted the most bang for his buck.
I've been trying this out on people and it just seems to sail right over their heads

This is the sort of riddle that I was referring to in my post.

I get it and I have to admit that if a little kid told me that joke I would laugh but an adult telling jokes about guns and killing animals may not be considered funny by many people today.

We live in a different world today and IMO once you get past a hearty Hello you have to tread softly.

I think that a sense of humor is very individual, just like one's personality. What's funny to some may not be funny to others, but that doesn't mean they don't have a sense of humor.

These days it seems you can't open your mouth without offending someone.

I agree!

Yes Deb. I've known a few.....even in my own family. Depends upon what YOU think is funny.

Some humor is so subtle that a lot of folks just don't "get it".

Life is too short to live without a few giggles once in awhile. :lol1:

People have different senses of what is "funny." I like sarcasm, irony and plain ole' wise-assery, while my husband laughs more at physical schtick or corny jokes that make me roll my eyes. :D

I always enjoyed the Marx Brothers and Laurel & Hardy, but never could get into the Three Stooges or Abbott and Costello. Go figure. If I turn on the TV now and see a stand-up comic on, I switch the channel because the stand-up today is mainly vulgar and/or demeaning to some groups.

I laugh aloud at my own jokes that I tell myself. Does that count? And don't tell me I'm the only one. :tapfoot:

I rarely laugh at contrived humor, the kind of thing you see in situation comedies where you know a team of writers spent days coming up with the material. I don't like knowing what the characters are going to say before they open their mouths.

Stand-up comedy leaves me cold. A friend who was on the comedy circuit used to try out his new routines on me. He said I was the toughest audience ever; if he could get a smile out of me, he knew the audiences would be rolling on the floor.

On the other hand, I absolutely love genuine wit. One of my college teachers told me there's a vast difference between comedy and wit. He said it was obvious that I don't appreciate comedy.

I think Pappy is hilarious, and I often laugh at his cartoons until I cry. His siggies make me fall over laughing. So there's that.

It's all a matter of taste. Rather like our taste in music. What I feel is beautiful and touching, may leave the next person cold. And what he/she finds quite deeply emotional, may leave me cold.

Nope, never known anyone with absolutely no sense of humour. I've known people who will laugh at just about anything and people whose sense of humour is more, shall we say, discerning, but nope don't know anyone without a sense of humour at all.

My favourite comedian for the moment is Michael McIntyre and I think he's hilarious, but as he has joked there are people who don't find him funny.

I agree. Not a good joke to tell to anyone. Why do you feel the need to even tell jokes. I know what to joke about with friends and family but they are inside jokes we all share.

Yes I have know many people like that, including my nephew.
They take themselves very very seriously, very introverted.
They hate puns and don't get other jokes. They may smile a bit
and are annoyed by innocent childish jokes.
Professional comedians all do observational humor because
they know that audiences don't like outright jokes.
Furthermore, they cannot understand why an intellectual like myself
would tell a lighthearted joke.
These folks are no fun to be around. But the opposite is the people
who laugh at everything! Any comment is hilarious to them. They are even
weirder.

Yes, I've known a couple. But both were extremely self-centered people. Whenever you would try to say anything funny, the first thing that came to their minds was...She must be talking about ME. So they either didn't understand, or took offense.

Fortunately most of my friends have a great sense of humor. They aren't offended often actually never. We all know each other and know the joke isn't meant to offend.
