There is a message on the dash display warning the driver to grab the wheel. I would hope it is audible as well as visual but if it is not audible what if the driver is watching his/her phone or reading or worse, sleeping?? Also, how do theses things operate in rush hour stop n go traffic?

does this mean blind people will be able to get where they want to go? or will the dash message still keep them from driving since grabbing the wheel to do what would be a mystery to them?

Call me old fashioned, but do no believe we should have driver-less vehicles on our roads!!! What possible advantage could it be to society?

IDK. If I got too old to drive, I might consider a driverless vehicle. Otherwise, I'd be apprehensive.

Since something goes wrong at sometime with everything, what do you do when "Something" goes wrong with your auto-pilot??!! This is like going to the pharmacy and throwing a dart at the medicines and taking home the bottle you hit with the dart.

There are thousands of possible "actions" that a driver might need to perform every time they get behind the wheel. The ability to put all those options into a computer program is very unlikely at this point. It may be possible at some point in the future, but today a driverless/self driving vehicle is just an accident waiting to happen.

Those talking about getting "too old to drive" and driver-less being the answer. You still must be a licensed driver and in the drivers seat ready to take over should you need to. Not a solution...

I've kinda quit coming to this site, and this thread is a reminder of why. A bunch of old farts telling us it can't be done while other folks are out there getting it done.

Peace and love

There is no way I would try it and I've had to quit driving. I've seen computers make too many mistakes and crash too many times to trust one in a car with my life!

The technology is no where near ready yet, but it will get there.

If you look at the problems for the major highways through big cities, a lot of it is caused by ego. People don't merge smoothly, or follow a safe distance, or maintain a constant speed, or even pay enough attention. If your car knows that the car 4 ahead of you is slowing down, and all the cars in between and around know it, everyone can adjust smoothly. No tailgaters. No slow pokes in the fast lane. No unsafe speed. The list is long. When the technology is ready, getting onto a major highway would be like your vehicle becoming part of a large machine until you exit. The traffic flow and safety would both be increased.

I'm keeping an open mind until I see how far along the technology development gets. I can see some major advantages, if they get it right. It will be fascinating to watch it unfold.

What was so wrong with driving before and how does allowing young drivers to do whatever they please now with no eyes on the road and no hand on the wheel improve safety??

Look for driverless truck lanes separated by barriers in the next twenty to thirty years. The technology is in it's infancy and will be driven (pun intended) by commercial vehicle use. The people working on the technology call humans "wetware", I'm not sure I like that term...

It would be really handy, at some time in the future, if a smart car knew where the open parking spots were in a large crowded parking lot. Better yet, drop me off at the door and go park itself until I call it to come pick me up at the door.

Being in a driverless car would scare the living daylights out of me. When driving I like to be in charge!

One of the best movies....of all time, IMO, was "2001, A Space Odyssey", released in 1968. The creators of that movie were almost Prophets. They foretold the coming of "Artificial Intelligence", and how it could impact humanity. 50 years later, we are beginning to see the beginning of this trend towards technology replacing humans, and it is becoming a real "slippery slope". With regard to driverless cars, I would Not trust a computer chip to be able to detect and compensate for the thousands of possible actions that might be required in traffic. I suppose it would help remove the hazards created by drunks, cell phone addicts, and mental midgets, but in so doing, it will create a whole new scenario for possible troubles.

This is why I won’t use one.......

It was found that the driver had received numerous visual and audible warnings to return his hands to the wheel, which he ignored. He was also going 10MPH over the speed limit. Also, the "autopilot" system itself was cleared of any malfunction by the investigation.
