Did You Read Comic Books?

This post is an offshoot about dolls. It triggered memories.

Really, who didn’t read comic books. What were your favourites.

I loved many, then I found love comics. A cousin‘s family stayed in our house while we were away and left a pile.
Wonderful reading and dreaming.

Not too often, most of my spending money went for food when I was little and cigarettes when I was a bit older. 😉🤭😂

My grandmother had preserved many of the things that my father, aunt, and uncles had when they were growing up.

That included a good selection of big little books from the 30s.

I was allowed one new comic book a week but we all traded them around, so everybody got to read them and keep up.

I liked Superman and Archie the best.

Going to my cousins' house was a real treat because they had lots and lots of comics, including ones I wasn't allowed to buy. They also had the movie magazines and the "true confessions" ones that were no-nos, too.

Forbidden fruit is the sweetest, y'know.

I loved comic books! My girlfriends were reading Archie and True Romance (gag 🤢), while my nose was in Daredevil, Justice League, Superman, Batman, The Avengers, X-Men, The Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Silver Surfer, Iron Man, Captain America, and The Incredible Hulk. What can I say? I like men in tights, lol. 😆

If I had to choose between buying a comic book or a candy bar because I didn't have money for both, hands down, I'd buy the comic book.

I was not an avid reader of them, but I did have a few. Boy do I wish I would’ve saved them:

Beetle Bailey
Archie
Green Hornet
When I went away to college, my mother cleared out my stash of comic books, including my first edition of Daredevil. 😩😭

I had a stack of them two feet high, but I don't think they would be worth much today. The only ones I was allowed were the kiddie ones like Little Lulu, Casper, Bugs Bunny, etc. I actually remember a few of the stories. It's surprising that the only comics that carried on to make fortunes, were the ones I was not allowed to read. Marvell comes to mind of course.

I had Superman, Batman, Flash, and Plastic man and a few others! (That last name might be wrong.)

The town we lived in had a small college and the students left empty pop bottles all over the campus. I would hunt those up and get the money for then at the grocery store. That funded my comic book purchases. I also traded with one of our barbers in town, so I was able to keep rotating with fresh comic books. I took good care of them and when I left for college, I stored them along with my marbles (including agates) in my closet.

When I got home from college, I discovered that my mom had thrown them all out. I knew then they might be worth something in time, but it was too late...

I don't think my mom ever knew what she had done, just her normal cleaning up the house routine...

I had a cousin that had 1000s of comics and he would loan then to me, so I never bought any, but I read them all. I think he had every known comic book. One wall of his bedroom was all old apple crates, loaded with comics. He had a list of contents of each crate.

My favorites were the westerns. I remember one with a character called Johnny Ringo.

And then I loved girl detectives and heroines. I thought I was Starr Flagg
and even had a motorcycle as a teen. ;) My mother hated that I tried to
dress like the heroines that were drawn by men. Somehow it made me
feel powerful and still does. :ROFLMAO:

Glad i'm not the only one who remembers Katy Keene.

My three older sisters bought most of them (with babysitting money) of course they shared. But by the time i was 6 they didn't hold as much interest for me, in part because i could go thru them so quick and they rarely sparked the interesting trains of thought the books i was reading did, or even the literature in my sisters' school books (which i took to reading after helping one of them study for tests.

The exceptions in terms of holding my interest were both bought by my oldest sister (10 yrs age gap): The Crypt Keeper (Tales from the Crypt?) And does Mad Magazine Count as a comic? While i didn't get all the sociopolitical parodies when that young i knew enough to know Mad was referencing real life occurrences and issues. Hard not to hear the daily news when laying on living room floor reading a book as Dad listened.

feywon...your post is interesting. I recall the Crypt Keeper and also, of course, Mad Magazine! I really liked Mad, but it was more expensive than regular 10 cent comics. I also felt that Mad would make my parents mad at me if they ever looked thru the magazine, so I did not buy many.

Thinking back, I have no idea why I thought my parents would have an issue with Mad, but I recall feeling that way...

It is fun thinking back about all of this, brings back some real fun memories...

Neither of my parents had an issue with Mad. Mom, however, was certain the Crypt Keeper would give me nightmares. It didn't, Guadalcanal Diary did.
