Did your parents give you a crummy name?

In my family.. all the first born males in the family were given the same name.. from great grandfather to my eldest brother , and his son... and the first born daughters were given the same name as the mother , grandmother etc

Many of us may recall when a parent called us by our first, middle and last names, we were in trouble.o_O

Herkimer Horatio Banshee get your posterior in this house now!!!
Agree!

To this day, due to mother only doing this, when her evil Gemini side showed it's ugly head, and called me by my given name... I feel very weary... Thankfully, Papa had given me a great nickname, do I tell people to use that name instead and then I'm able to relax...

My mother named me “Yvonne”, and I have no idea why because no one else in the family has ever had that name, and it was not after anyone she knew. It was pretty uncommon back in the 40’s and 50’s; so I never knew anyone else with my same name when I was growing up.
No one could spell it, and some didn’t know how to pronounce it, so that is something I have had to do my whole life. I am used to being called other names (like Elaine) when people can’t remember Yvonne, so I will answer to anything that sounds close.

My dad always called me “Bonnie” (and sang me the My Bonnie lies over the ocean song) , so I could tell when I met people if they were friends of my mom (called me Yvonne) or my dad (called me Bonnie). Some of my friends called me Vonnie or just Von, so all of it was fine with me.

In "age group"..very common..
even had a gal-pal with with the same name..at one point in time.
Not a name to go'grow old with'..so I modify a bit...

My birth name (Mary) was changed when I was adopted when I was 3 years old. I've always hated my first name (Colleen). It's mispronounced a lot and I have to spell it to everyone. It never felt right to me and I feel like my whole life has been a misfit because my name was changed.

My step-son's name is Leighton but everyone in the family calls him Lee, except me. I've always called him Leighton.

My mom could never remember names. I'm Dick, my brother is Jimmie. She'd yell "Dimmie" or "Jickey", so we never knew who she was yelling at. My parents gave me a middle name that was a dork name. I often thought of changing it, legally.
Also, I think you should wait to name a kid, so the name fits. If your kid turns out to be a criminal, "Thornton" doesn't fit. And how many strippers are named "Penelope"?

yes, lots of Yvonne's here, most of them are called Von... or Vonnie... (y)

DH’s one son has a name that gets shortened and that always bothered DH. He and the son both use the short version now. It’s like Ronald being called Ron. Funny that it bothered him because he goes by the shortened version of his own name.

I disliked my middle name growing up, but when I learned that it was my g.grandfather's name, my attitude changed. I use it as my forum name.

Ever since I learned the story of Nathan Hale in school all those years ago, I've loved the name Nathan. He was one of my heroes.

I'm a "Junior" but I didn't carry it forward to my first son. In his case we went with a name completely unique, not from either side of the family. The next two sons got middle names of the first names of brothers of my ex. I thought that was fair, and nobody from my side turned their noses up at that.

I heard that it was an Indian custom not to immediately name their kids, but to let them somehow name themselves, by their personalities and likes.
I never would have taken my middle name EVER! Do you think some names don't fit the person. Maybe we should follow the Indian custom? Did your parents give you a crummy name?
I heard the Indian custom was to name a child by the 1st. thing they saw when looking out of their teepee.
A daughter was named Leaping Fawn
A son was named Two dogs screwing.

That's common with males here in the US but unusual for females, yet I know two families where mother and daughter share a first name. For males you add a junior, like John Jr. But what do you do about females?

My dad's name was Fahrney, I'm sure glad I'm not a Fahrney Jr.!

My ex and her mother had the same name. They went by different nicknames for that.

I was definitely named wrong. I should've been named Susan or Debbie or Janet

Instead I was given a name better suited to a cheerleader with big boobs.
I have a cousin named Candy who feels the same as you. And it's not short for Candace, they just named her Candy right out of the gate.

And she feels like the older she gets, the more unsuitable her name is. She's 71.

every damm pet in the world has been called my name lol
Fido or Rover would sound rather odd on a human.

I hate my first name, and tried to dump it when I was in high school. I had my middle name inserted into my birth certificate when I was 17,I like it. I did discover recently that my grandma spelled it differently than I have been spelling it for 67 years!
