My mother named me “Yvonne”, and I have no idea why because no one else in the family has ever had that name, and it was not after anyone she knew. It was pretty uncommon back in the 40’s and 50’s; so I never knew anyone else with my same name when I was growing up.
No one could spell it, and some didn’t know how to pronounce it, so that is something I have had to do my whole life. I am used to being called other names (like Elaine) when people can’t remember Yvonne, so I will answer to anything that sounds close.
My dad always called me “Bonnie” (and sang me the My Bonnie lies over the ocean song) , so I could tell when I met people if they were friends of my mom (called me Yvonne) or my dad (called me Bonnie). Some of my friends called me Vonnie or just Von, so all of it was fine with me.
