Difficulty watching local news

I have all but given up watching local news because of how it often depresses me.
Recently, i clicked on local news and the 1st story I saw was of a mother who had been arrested for killing her 2 year old child.
I know these things happen , but I'll never understand WHY they happen. When i think of a child being murdered it depresses me to no end.
I identify with the innocent baby and I imagine how that child must have felt during his/her last moments. 2 days after seeing that story, I'm still depressed.

In states where abortion is banned, there's going to be more and more women having babies they're unable to care for or that they don't want, and more mothers looking for a way out of their unwanted and unplanned situation. Some people aren't fit to be parents. That's a fact. The responsible ones will use birth control and have an abortion when an accident occurs, where that's an option. Take away that option and there is going to be trouble.

Then again, it could be that there's more to the story. I did a quick search and this article came up.

No matter what the cause, there is ALWAYS the option of dropping an unwanted child off at any fire station. No questions asked.
No possible excuse for murdering a child !

I don’t watch the news. There’s no way to avoid sensational stories because they filter through social media feed, or other media and even forums like these.

But the day to day bad news that seems to be the stock-in-trade of my local news outlets? No thanks. I’ll tune in to the weather and traffic but just mute the news. It’s way too depressing.

I don't find the local news to be depressing. I find it more balanced and watered-down than the national news. I sometimes watch Good Morning America and it is so sensationalized I find myself more depressed.
My wife is usually up an hour before me, she always has KABC channel 7(owned by Disney) on, I personally think Good Morning America stinks in so many ways, as part of a supposed 'news' feature. I despise the way they play games to string the viewer along, baiting them to stay tuned to sit through another commercial break. I usually , tolerate this as long as it takes to finish my breakfast then I'm headed to my computer room.

I always record it on DVR and watch it later because there are more commercials than there is actual content. (n)

Not keeping up with the news, how irresponsible! Sorry Chef, I'm not attacking you personally, just repeating something that I have heard a few times when I have inadvertently admitted that I avoid the news.
Two things that happened in the sixties put me off news, news stories and journalists. The assassination of President Kennedy in 1963 then in 1966: The Aberfan disaster, the catastrophic collapse of a colliery spoil tip. The tip had been created on a mountain slope above the Welsh village of Aberfan, near Merthyr Tydfil, and overlaid a natural spring. A period of heavy rain led to a build-up of water within the tip which caused it to suddenly slide downhill as a slurry, killing 116 children and 28 adults as it engulfed Pantglas Junior School and a row of houses.
Since that event I have not read a newspaper, listened to a news bulletin on the radio nor watch any TV news. I still see snippets here and there but never follow them up. Such is life.

I like to go on long stretches of not watching any news at all and only watch when something really big has happened. Not only does it help me to stay much more positive but always provides quite a few topics of conversation to talk about with friends and family. Since everyone else is watching the news they have to explain to me what's going on if they want my opinion on it. I have to say lately I am so turned off by regular tv because it's literally all commercials for either insurance or pharmaceuticals.

I watch the world news in the evening and then The NewsHour on PBS, but by then, I've already read what's happening in the world. Sometimes you benefit from seeing the images and videos they show, but their time on those shows is limited, so you really need to read the news in order to get the full story and the details.

I don't watch the news at all unless something is happening. Like before this war began, I never watched the news. I only started watching it sometimes now because of the war so I can know if I need to prepare for WWIII. But I don't watch it on TV, I read it online then will watch a video of the particular story that interests me.

Amen! There's no excuse for murder!

Exactly! Which is why I only read it online.

I do that too, before the war in Ukraine I rarely watched the news, and I never watch TV. I don't even have cable. I stream everything from online. I can't stand commercials. TV has nothing but illness commercials.

I’ve about given upwatching local news on tv until after 7 pm on Tuesday, 11/8. That’s when the polls close for our Gov & HR election. News and other shows, not even all local, are riddled with the worst vicious mudslinging local commercials ever. They’ve even popped up when I was trying to watch CNN or YouTube.
I can find out as much news as I want to know on line.

Our local news is about what's happening in my backyard so I watch that. National news on TV is so biased that I avoid it. Instead I read Daily Mail online and get U.S. news from across the pond from a source that has no political axe to grind as far as I know.

I agree that watching the news can be a bit depressing....however, keeping up with what is happening is somewhat necessary. Our local news is pretty mundane...just the facts with little or no "opinions". The Network and Cable news is sometimes "biased" so I often go to Internet sites to get further details....AND skip the endless commercials.

I've been limiting my exposure to local and national and world news. I had been watching it so much I started thinking that something bad is going to happen in my life. The thought was haunting me, driving me batty.

I am one person who was greatly affected by the news. I feel for the people who are on the news. I'm an empath. I'm changing that (news watching) now and have been for awhile. Instead I watch movies and watch Netflix series and also listen to a lot of great music. I feel a lot better.

One of the things about local news is the sheer violence of it. Even in backwater towns, it's shootings, fires, car crashes, robberies', fatal accidents, drug arrests, child abuse, etc. Unfortunately, that is the real world. We want to live in a happy, totally ethical paradise, which is totally mythical. Even Disney flicks have villains. Being human does not necessarily mean sainthood, and local TV news reminds us of that.

this is something you must do.. if you feel negative news affects your mental health it's imperative you simply don't watch it and don't read it...On forums like this , don't read the news sections.... just enjoy your life, by watching, reading, and enjoying the nice things around you, you've come too far in life to be getting ill over other people's behaviours..

Thank you. Following your advice. Going to enjoy life. I just skipped watching the news on now.yay.

I watch the news daily at 5 - 7 and 11 - 11:35. It's a combination of both local and national. There is a major fire practically on our doorstep, so I like to keep up on the prodress of that and the reports on the air quality (COPD) - there is usually something going on that I want to be informed on.
