Discount on internet service

I received this email from Social Security (subscription.service@subscriptions.ssa.gov.) regarding discounts for internet to people on a limited income. A lot of people living on just Social Security may qualify. With the cost of internet these days, this might be an option. I never heard of this before.

I cut and pasted the main information from the email here:

Internet access is necessary for work, school, healthcare, and more. Unfortunately, high speed internet remains unaffordable for too many households. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) runs a program, the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), that reduces the cost of getting online for people with limited income.

What discounts are available?

  • $30 per month toward internet service for eligible households. Some companies offer internet service for $30, making internet service free.
  • $75 per month for households on qualifying Tribal lands.
  • Eligible households also can receive a one-time discount of up to $100 toward purchasing a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from participating provider.

If your household income is 200% or less than the Federal Poverty Guidelines or someone in your household participates in certain government assistance programs, you may be eligible for the benefits the ACP provides. Visit the ACP website to see if you qualify. Please do not contact Social Security with questions about the ACP.

Yes, I received it yesterday also. When I contacted my internet server this past spring, the rep guided me to this program, but I didn't qualify. It is an easy form to fill out, and they do get back to you with a decision very quickly. If you feel you may qualify, then apply.

A catch I've found: if you have lifeline service for your phone, you can only get this internet benefit from the same company.
Catch is, around here, companies that provide lifeline service don't provide home internet (for computers), and companies that provide home internet don't have phones. So it's impossible. My internet bill is the highest monthly bill I have, but I can't get any discounts. Topping it off, they charge around $18 if a payment is late.

I was going to post about this! I received the same email but I wanted to check it by going directly to the FCC site rather than click on the link in the email. Although I know SS does send out emails from time to time, with all the scamming, it pays to be careful. I knew as soon as I read the criteria that I wouldn't qualify.
