A GP has revealed how debit and credit cards can carry microbes from those who have used the same card reader before you, including bacteria such as salmonella and E.Coli.

Former orthopaedic surgeon Dr Chike Emeagi, Medical Director of Hampstead Aesthetics Clinic and Dr Chike Clinics, told FEMAIL that while the risk is low, it is still possible for the coronavirus bacteria to survive long enough on the flat surface of a card reader to be transferred to your card.

He explained that germs can hide in the nooks and crannies of watches, rings, credit cards and bank notes, and recommends disinfecting your cards and jewellery once a week.

I have a chip card and it has to be inserted or slid most places. Other places do take hold of it - and I really didn't think about reaching for it. I'll add it to my growing list of things to disinfect. Thanks!

I also wonder about paper items being brought into my house daily: the newspaper and the mail. Can the virus live for any length of time on paper?

Our local news advised people to open the mail, toss the outer envelopes and wash your hands for 20 seconds before reading the mail, paying bills, etc...

They did indicate that the possibility of transmission from paper or cardboard surfaces was low but better to be safe than sorry.

OK, first let me say that I am not just starting an ARGUMENT but...merely making a point of logic.....If we open the envelope, & discard it.......How do we know that the person inserting the correspondence wasn't infected?

But my cards do not touch the reader. I just hold it above.
That's good but when in a store one is probably handling merchandise with those same fingers. That same merchandise other members of the public, store staff and manufacturing employees might have handled.

Also on the once a week thing, Handles. Handles around the house and car door handles, knobs, buttons, steering wheel, brake handle etc. Clean the places you tend to touch after going out in public for errands.

I do this every 2 days. I have no idea tbh how often I should be doing it, I read somewhere thatt in high traffic areas it's not overdoing it by cleaning every few hours..but there's only 2 of us here so every 48 hours I disinfect ...

Every handle in the house including,

... doors, cupboards (bathroom and kitchen) , windows, microwave, stove /grill... toilets..taps(faucets) (sinks and bath & shower )...

Every light switch , and door frame including the front and back doors.. particualrly where hands rest

All the bannisters, and rails on the stairs

My mouse and keyboard gets done every day, all remote controls and my mobile phone and landline the same

That's above and beyond all my normal cleaning..

My car I clean every time I get into it, which at the moment is about once every 10 days ( only going out for essentials ) .. so before I set off anywhere I clean the gear stick , the interior and exterior door handle ... the switches for the windows etc... the brake handle and the steering wheel...and I spray my keys .. all with 99% disinfectant spray and a clean cloth which I now keep in the car. ( it just take s a couple of minutes to do)

Not really sure what else to do tbh , indeed if I'm doing it too much or too little...

Using the elevators in my building involves pressing buttons. I hold something in my hand, like a tissue or plastic bag, to avoid touching the button directly. Then I dispose of that item immediately when getting off the elevator.

I only wear small earrings (pierced) when I'm home so no biggie. I think some of this stuff is over the top as long as people continue to wash their hands.
I wouldn't normally worry about wearing my ring at work but, it has little places where things can hide and given my profession I have chosen to just go without it.

I sanitize my hands before going into the car and house. I carry a bottle in pocket.
