Do guys keep a jar full of coins? Is it a 'guy' thing?

A TV comedienne was talking about men. She said she noticed that all men have a jar full of coins. "It was their savings plan". It was some kind of male thing. ( Women keep them at the bottom of their purses.) Errrr, I have a huge bottle of coins. Before going to all credit cards, I used to dump my change into it. Probably have $1,000 in change. My brother has one, too Most of my buddies have one. Although MINE is the biggest :) . ( Guy thing!) Do you think it's a guy thing to have a jar full of coins.

I used to but gave it up long ago. I would roll the quarters, nickels, dimes and loonies and take them to the bank for the cash bills. I do have small coin purses in both cars as sometimes I need the change - the local newspaper girl is paid in cash and some stores like cash.

No, I do not keep change in the bottom of my purse as it makes it too heavy. I do have a wallet with some bills and coins and reward cards, etc.

To answer your question...no, I don't think its a guy thing as I have never known a guy to keep a jar full of coins but maybe I didn't meet the right guy.

Not a guy thing. I have a pot full of coins. I also have a little pot marked “Found Money” for our lucky pennies; there are none of those here anymore.

I have a double magnum wine bottle. The mouth is big enough to take quarters. But, since I use my credit card for almost everything. it is pretty much empty now.

I only use a credit card anymore after covid so no more change. I used to keep loose change in a cup for awhile, but later took it with me so it would not accumulate. I have a can of foreign coins I collected while overseas though for souvenirs along with some cash.

A couple of years ago, I finally decided to get rid of a big pile of pennies & a few dimes & nickels. I got a bunch of rolls from my bank.
It took 4 days to roll them & I got over $300.00. I didn't expect that much.

Except when I''m actually going into retail stores, dislike having coins in pants pockets so am quick upon coming home, tossing them into containers and never grabbing any when leaving home. A minor amount are in my vehicle if there was a reason to need some. I separate out the quarters since they have use in our laundry rooms. The useless pennies are just annoying. The chump change dimes and nickels won't bother with putting into those paper wrappers. Eventually will bring them down to those machines that automatically sort coins for a fee.

I never had one, but my husband always had one, a huge 5-gallon "jar", lol. After he died, I wrapped up the coins and took them to the bank. I now have an apothecary jar with some pennies in it, but it's not full because like most people these days, I don't accumulate many coins. I never throw coins in the bottom of my purse. Any that I carry are kept in a zippered compartment in my wallet.

My husband's "jar".

My late brother had a jar full of coins. After he passed, I cleaned up his room and collected all loose coins and put them in the jar. I then placed the jar up high in a cupboard at Mom's house. On my next trip to see Mom I noticed the jar was gone. I was livid. Of course, Mom was too sick and had no idea what I was talking about. I assume it was my oldest sister and/or her twins who took the coins. I could not do something so selfish as that.

Not here, the wife is the one with the coin fetish. Has a 5 gallon glass Sparklett's bottle with change in it, and a plastic Coke bottle that a couple feet tall, with change. She used to steal my quarters and insist she was putting together a little State Quarter collector album for the grandchildren. Both her grandchildren are gown, been in the military and have been raising their own kids for several years. Oh well, maybe the great-grands or great-great-grand kids will get the quarters.

Edit I don't care about wife stealing my quarters anymore, I don't like carrying change. Only thing I need quarters for is the car wash vacuum or self serve wash stall.

Yes I do.. have done for years... I've got a big round leather container box .. and I also sometimes keep coins in leather boxes..

last time I counted them out from the square boxes there was over £400.. it took a long time to count out and bag up......I don't let it get as much as that any more.. I believe I've only got about £40 in pennies in the round box now

I save quarters in a coffee mug on a shelf over the kitchen window. Whenever DS comes over, I give him whatever is in the mug to use in the washers where he lives. Pennies, nickels, and dimes are saved in a tea mug with a lid. When it gets full, I take it to the credit union and let their machine count them, then deposit whatever they amount to. I have another coffee mug on the kitchen windowsill where I stash dollar bills for whenever I buy lunch for DS and his husband.

It takes a while to amount to much because I mostly use my debit card for purchases.

I don't think it's 'a guy thing'

But

This guy has been doing it for years

I have this beer mug for quarters that, when topped out, comes to $100

On the left is where all the other coins go
It too, comes to $100 when full

Used to roll the quarters (tediious....very tedious)
And run the other thru those coin changers
But
My credit union sorts 'em for free
Takes about 5 minutes

I only use cash when the purchase is around $10-$20
But
It adds up

Nope. I used to collect coins too and I'm pretty feminine, I think. :giggle:

It's definitely not a guy thing. My Mom always said to me save your change because you may need it for a rainy day.
You won't even know how many I already had and they came in handy.
I think this would be a good thing to do for young single unwed mothers.
You always see kids at the store wanting to put something in the grocery cart and then Mom has to say No because they can't afford it.
Well she can now use these coins as maybe a treat for the kids.

I have three large [3 pound ?] coffee cans full, as well as two of those large heavy plastic Coffee-Mate jars as well. I have no idea how much it all is in value ? Likely I'll never take them to the bank ...... mostly due to the fact that only certain branches will take it anyway.

Oh-well .... when I croak .... someone will get a bonus.
