Do we Seniors Eat Too Much Fruit?

I came across this video on YouTube, and after watching it, I’m wondering if I’m eating too much fruit.

I doubt that you're eating too much fruit to make a difference in your health. Youtube is a great place to find valuable information like "how to" repair this or that. Youtube is also rife with 'info-videos' that make thought provoking unconventional claims, which ultimately have some underlying commercial goal.

Good point, Nathan, I agree that YouTube is full of "info-videos" with hidden agendas. I’m not worried about fruit in general, but I do think it’s smart to stay aware of how much natural sugar I’m eating, especially at my age. So far, the people who dislike the video haven’t been able to point out anything in it that’s actually untrue.

My first response to the thread was, "I don't eat enough fruit!" Bc of my IBS there are a number of fruits I simply can't eat without a flare-up. So mainly I eat berries.

Berries have a low glycemic index, so I am eating more of them and cutting back on mangoes and bananas because I need to lose weight.

Yes, in a discussion with one of my Yoga teachers about losing a couple pounds would be easier if I limited the natural sugar intake as well.

You claim you "would not pay ANY attention" to the video, yet here you are dismissing it without even watching it. How can you be so sure it’s "quacky" if you didn’t bother to see what it actually says?
How? I am sure. Quite sure. Fantastic claims. Super long video. And a product or subscription of some type. Just take a look at the other videos shown below!

I am not against alternative medicine, but I take it with a grain of salt and always look for validation, preferably well designed tests.

So ridiculous, eh?!?!
Oh so dramatic to get the 'clicks'....

Life is too short to watch videos that a so called doctor fails to address the individual needs of seniors. Not all seniors can tolerate the same foods and not all seniors have the same digestive function. He makes a dangerous generalization. I watched 15 minutes of this video and he failed to making a compelling case for his claim that seniors eating certain fruits, are damaging their heart. If he can't make a case for his claims in 15 minutes, then it is just a marketing scheme of some kind.

Who is this Dr. Thomas? Why is he doing videos if he is a heart surgeon? Does he have credentials I can check out?

I think the remaining 45 minutes watching this video would do more damage to my heart that going on a total fruit diet. :ROFLMAO:

I watched the video. I had been told by my doctor not to eat grapefruit while I was taking my statin drug. My nutritionist told me to eat only 4 inches of a banana because of the sugar content. I think we all knew commercially canned fruit wasn’t healthy if it was packed in syrup.

I eat a lot of fresh peaches, watermelon, cantaloupe, grapes, cherries and any other fruit that is fresh this time of the year.

On the serious side, something like grapefruit juice (and others) conflicts with medication in a bad way? It seems to me it is the medication conflicting with a healthy diet item... That doesn't sound like a medication I would be keen to take.

Looks like a big pharma propaganda video scaring you into changing your diet so you can take more meds

yes, grapefruit can interact with some medications, mainly cardiac agents.. This is something I know already, not from a click-baity article

If you google you can find lists of such medications from reputable sources - if it were me and I needed cardiac medications, I would take them and forgo eating grapefruit.

I eat tons pf fruit. So far my heart loves it and I've been doing it for years. I eat a well balanced diet though. I don't plan to change and I agree these videos have ulterior motives.
Good Lord Girl! Tons of fruit? Should I call the suicide hot line? :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Michael, I agree.

eat mostly whole fresh foods and only avoid any foods that have a specific issue for you.

The idea that everyone should avoid grapefruit or any of the other fruits listed ( I started watching but he took so long to get to the point that I stopped at grapefruit) is just, as you said, quacky scare mongering.
It has been known for years that grapefruit interferes with many RX's. You can find that information on any legit health website.

We’re sorry, but the person you are trying to reach is no longer responding to comments from people who haven’t watched the entire video. Please watch to the end and try your comment again. Thank you!

Yes, retired traveller, as I said in my last post: reputable sources will corroborate that.

Information one can find much quicker and with less melodrama if that is applicable to you.

But not something everyone else needs to worry about

Right, and he explains that in the video. Which makes it odd that some folks feel comfortable rejecting the rest of what he says without even hearing it.

I’m not a nutritionist, but I would be willing to wager that there aren’t any nutrients in fruit that you can’t get in vegetables. Mind you, fresh fruit is my favorite food but sugar is still sugar. A typical breakfast for me is often chopped mangoes, papaya, bananas with walnuts, almonds, and pumpkin seeds. Healthy but not good for weight loss.
