Do you absolutely have to have dessert after dinner?

Pretty much every night. It’s a sliver for me, a conservative size for DH. He’s underweight.

For those who don’t eat dessert, do you snack on candies or sweets throughout the day.

DDiL laughed at how we always had dessert. She was nibbling on junk food all day & night.
Yes I have to admit, I'm a chocoholic, so I do snack on chocolate during the day... 🍫

As long as it's sugar free. A sugar substitute is OK in moderation. When I used to run daily, I always enjoyed half of a dark chocolate bar. I don't run anymore. The virus has left me with some balance problems. You may never find some of the after effects that the Coronavirus can leave behind because my Neurologist told me that unless multiple people have like symptoms, the CDC will not conclude that the virus is the cause.

Well I love sweets, especially ice cream, cookies and strawberry shortcake (just to name a few). But I can't buy them or else I will eat them in a couple of days. I can't stop. Since I am eating low carbs only, I have not had any for over a month now. I used to bake a lot and had to stop that too. Health wise, I feel so much better without the sugar and carbs. So that keeps me from buying any.

Make our own low carb desserts. Chocolate and lemon are two favorite flavors, as well as angel food cake and when its cool or chilly hot chocolate. Love brownies and real chocolate just about anything!

What do use in place of the flour? I have all 3 varieties of Swerve and am thinking of making homemade gelatin with one of them. Making my own recipe to replace the fruit juice that you need for it though.

No dessert after dinner but sometimes after lunch. It depends on our food calories for the day. Dessert is usually ice cream or muffins that I have baked or for hubby and I a Bailey's Irish Cream and milk for mid afternoon. We can always have a treat any time (like chocolate, yogurt, fruit, etc) Of course, we always have dessert when company comes - whenever that will be in the future.

I do have a sweet tooth, and if I have ice cream, cake or pie in the house I'll usually have some after supper. But not right away, usually after an hour or two. If I don't have anything good around the house, I'm okay with skipping dessert. My husband like sweets too, and unlike me, he never gains weight, so we always have some chocolate in the cupboard, but I don't ever have a desire to have that for dessert.

We never ever had dessert growing up, so it's not ingrained in me to have it. Only if we go out for a special restaurant meal, will I order something very special for dessert.

My o/h on the other hand, did grow up having dessert after dinner. He has a stash of little individually wrapped chocolates that he has a few of. I will sometimes have one.

I never got in the habit of having dessert after dinner. If I am out for lunch with friends, I notice they love their desserts, and I enjoy watching them. But, mostly I don't have room for dessert at the time. I tend to have a bit of something sweet once or twice a week later in the evenings. My muffin tops thank me for not adding more to them every time I get on the scale.

Almond flour is the prime substitute for regular flour. Also whipping egg whites and folding them into the almond flour gives rise and bounce to your cake recipes. We were in the food manufacturing business, and there are also substitutes online made from protein flours. Erythritol is a good natural product to use in place of sugar. It measures and bakes like sugar. It tastes just like sugar, too. It will re-crystallize if you don't have high enough temps when say making puddings. Just heat to boiling on the stove and add it - boil for a minute or two. Better than artificial ingredients any day!

You can make most any dessert recipe low carb. We made thousands and formulated low carb foods for many companies.

We often have desert after dinner -- loaded with sugar, and an hour or so later, I find myself falling asleep on the couch. I thought it was just old age, but it seems to be from the sugar crash. When I skip desert, I don't crash. I tried that again last night and even after several margaritas, I still didn't fall asleep during the movie we were watching. But I really wanted some desert.

Thank you, I am going to experiment.

I have to have something sweet after dinner and it doesn't matter how full I am.

Me too. After lunch I used to always have a snack size chocolate bar, but since I decided to try to reduce additional sugar I've gotten used to having 3 or 4 dates instead, but I really do crave that (something sweet) after lunch.
Then after supper I always let myself have a reduced sugar dessert (in the range of approx 9 - 12 grams of added sugar). I would feel deprived if I didn't get my dessert.

I realized this morning that my coffee flavorer adds one gram of sugar. I'm undecided what to do about that, I'm not sure if the WHO guidance of it being safe to have up to 25 grams of sugar per day is to be trusted, if so, I can keep my coffee flavor enhancer. I'm not even exactly sure what the guidance is, whether 25 is safe every day or just means it is super bad to go over that but best to be way under it?

But however much I "need" my dessert after a meal pales compared to my expectations for my birthday. In a month I'll be struggling. I usually have an angel food cake and a whole tub of chocolate whipped frosting, and also a rich piece of chocolate cake with tons of frosting from the deli. I've recently bought an angel food cake pan and am planning on trying to bake my own using whole wheat flour and swerve. So far I'm worrying less about carbs but trying to use whole grain, but maybe that won't work for angel food cake.

Almond flour will work well for angel food cake, as the egg whites are doing most of the leavening. Add cream of tartar and baking soda like the normal recipes call for.

I absolutely will have desert, but only after dinner. Pies, cakes, and donuts fill the bill, and a few pieces of Hershey's chocolate later. Life is short. I see no harm in sugar unless you are diabetic. I'm thin and eat all things in moderation.
