Do you believe in psychics ?

We know more about our universe than we know about the human mind. My mother had a few experiences so I don't categorically deny it or anything else that we have questions about. There are a couple Palm Readers in my area and I have heard people swear by them but those readers are baloney as far as I'm concerned. So what is the human mind capable of? One thing I believe is the mind a limitless abundance of the unknown. So pressed for an answer I believe some people have abilities others do not but the John Edwards and the NY Psychic or whatever here title is that make money off being a fraud are just that. Edgar Cayce is an interesting person to read about.

I don't believe people can read your future. I used to watch the John Edward show with my mom. She loved it. It was impressive, but I'm not 100% convinced he was doing what he said he was doing.
The Amazing Kreskin totally outed those guys. Kreskin admitted he has no powers yet did the exact same thing as those other guys who claim to talk to the dead, etc. It's all about the questions asked. I will admit those guys are impressive but how do you know the people aren't plants?

I believe it was the John Edward show, but not positive which one it was. Anyway, miked people from the show stood in the waiting line & recorded conversations of the audience members, who of course were saying things like "I do hope John will sense Aunt Audrey and will tell me what my dream meant" or whatever they were babbling about.

Then John would say "Does anyone here have an aunt Audrey? She needs to tell you something."

If the only REAL time is the ‘present moment,’ then how do they read your future?
If they’ve read your future and it’s not the direction you want to go, can it be changed?

How much free will do we really have?
If we put our faith in God/ LOVE/ universal laws, can this change our destiny?

What are your thoughts?
I find all this spooky ( scary ) stuff.
I think psychics are similar to the false prophets of the bible.

I don't believe in psychics. I do however believe that there are people who are very sensitive that can pick up on things and know certain things that others are not aware of. Empathic or highly sensitive people are capable of reading many things about people. Not just people they happen to be standing in front of.

I don't believe that psychics are really predicting the future by seeing the future but I do believe that some of them are capable of determining likely futures for some people. But I don't think it's really any specific forward seeing abilities, I think its more grounded in being able to see things in people that lead them to provide likely outcomes for them.

Also people who visit psychics may be unconsciously fulfilling the predictions of a psychic through self fulfilling prophesies.

I think we have infinite free will but are still affected by the world around us.

I also think that we are able to change our "destiny" by putting our faith in something. We already know from numerous, repeatable psychological experiments that people can improve the results of their efforts by doing a number of different things. You can even improve the outcome by standing in a powerful position for some period of time (1 to 3 minutes ??? with your hands on your hips in a powerful stance) so keeping one's faith in the positive effects of something will improve one's performance.

We also know that the placebo affect will cause some people to have health improvements when they believe the sugar pills they've been given are actual some sort of medicine to improve their condition. So the power of believing is very strong.

You might find these subjects a little less spooky by doing some reading up on the power of the mind. I'd recommend books with a good deal of psychology behind them. I'm afraid I don't have any I could recommend.

My common sense tells me to believe only in provable fact so, no, I don't believe in them. But .......

I once (early 90s) hosted a spur of the moment 'girls day out' trip to Cassadaga FL (self proclaimed Psychic Capital of the World) It was intended to be a jokey, fun experience with some out of town guests. No pre-planning. Our choices for a reading came from names posted on a bulletin board in the town center. Each saw a different psychic.

My reader blew my socks off by beginning with the statement "I see an especially difficult date for you" and she named the birth date - month and day - of my son who had died several years earlier following a long illness.

I returned to see the same reader a couple of times later where she again proved that she could intuit certain things about me although she never even knew my last name. For instance, she warned me of a vitamin deficiency and just a few days later, I was in emergency room with severely low potassium.

She once warned me of vehicle trouble with left front tire. She said "I see a vehicle but it isn't a car?" 2 days before, a brake had seized and began to burn just as I was entering service shop for routine servicing on my RV.

I've been a believer in Psychics since 1964. My sister and I had the opportunity to see James Van Praagh. There were over 300 people in the audience and he started talking about a man who had just passed away from leg surgery. He also said his wife's name was Beth, Beth Elizabeth, and she loved going to Bingo. He said many other things. My sister and I just sat there in shock. My Dad had just passed away from leg surgery and my Mom's name was Elizabeth and she went to Bingo 4 nights a week. We hadn't told anyone anything about why we were there. We were both truly amazed.

My ex wife & I were at a party years ago & there was a psychic there who was "reading" people. Since my ex believed in stuff like that (along with astrology), she had a reading, which led to us having an argument. I said, there is nothing wrong with a psychic - as long as you are entertained by it & don't take it too seriously or make big changes in your life, based on what she tells you.

The psychic told her she would be married 3 times. Well, she was 1/3rd right. We were divorced a few years later & she died 3 years ago.
I wondered why the psychic couldn't predict why we divorced (she cheated on me) or when she would die (at 66) or what she would die of (cancer.)

I used to be one. Yup, me, the atheist, believer of only the purely physical. At one time I used to channel, etc. I was into auras, ESP, Edgar Casey, Shirely Maclaine . I gave readings. I believed I could transcend time into either the past, or future. I had a psychic journal, Personally, I found that it was quite easy to become engrossed. Once you get started, I found there were no brakes, you just kept going further and further, without any real assessment of their validity. While I was obsessed with the psychic world, it all made sense. But, then, for me, I slowly came to the conclusion that it was all self delusion.

I was reading another thread and it reminded me of when I was 15yrs old and my Mother's 85yr old father got lost at a festival. I had 3 cousins who were nurses at the time and they went to see Jeanne Dixon, who was giving a lecture. When the lecture was over she would sign her autograph. One of my cousins went up and had a picture of my grandfather face down so she could get a signature. As soon as Jeanne touched it she said "Oh my you will find his body Tuesday." My cousins got all shook up, but sure enough, a little boy tripped over my grandfather's body the next Tuesday. So that's another reason I am a believer.

I am an engineer (retired), with healing hands,
but I have never thought that I was ever psychic,
yet I was very good at predicting horse races on
the flat when I was younger and gambling.

I consider myself a skeptic on psychic matters, but am receptive to their consideration as well. Many are outright frauds of course that prey upon the gullible, while others are harder to explain. I think that psychic ability may also exist along a continuum scale along with other uncharted powers of mind, ranging from those who possess just a mild smattering of it to those who are truly gifted...

My only experience (indirect) with a psychic occurred when I was in the 4th grade. Jean Dixon was a famous "soothe-sayer" at the time, with some books published and a newspaper column. As I recall, it was widely publicized that President Kennedy (or the First Lady) consulted her from time to time.

Anyway, she claimed that on a specific day at a specific hour on the morning of that day, California would fall into the ocean. I think it was a day in April around 10 AM. I recall that on that day, at that time, class stopped and we (the entire school) waited to fall into the ocean (I was living in Los Angeles at the time). It didn't happen, and Jean Dixon fell into obscurity after that. I suppose it was quite a gamble stunt in which she could have either won big for her career or just faded away, which is what happened. Few probably remember her.

People believe what they want to believe. And I'm quite happy with that. But whenever I hear about Jean Dixon, it gets me riled up. She's a pet peeve. She claimed to have predicted JFK's assassination. Well, not exactly. Her actual "prediction" was that she claimed, " I see dark clouds over the White House" in a newspaper column.. So tell me how you get from "dark clouds" to Lee Harvey Oswald with a rifle. What kind of idiot prediction is "dark clouds"? It could mean anything. And why is it that no one said "JFK would be shot , in Dallas, TX at 1:30 PM , Nov.22, 1963." See, that is a prediction, "dark clouds" is BS.
Somewhere there are hours of me, on tape, "channeling". I could tell you, in a "trance ", what the world was like 3 thousand years into the future. Never saw me in a wheelchair, though. I can remember being in a group, and all of us marveling about how brilliant a violet "aura" was over another person. I did get heavily into the occult. I'm not sure why all the 'magic' seemed to evaporate. People believe what they want to believe. And I'm quite happy with that.
