Do You Date Your Purchases?

That is a good idea. I don't normally do it, but I did it last month for the first time on the instant coffee container (took me 23 days to use up 8 oz).

For items that have good prices on Amazon I like to set up subscriptions, and it would be very helpful to know how long it takes me to use up so that I could optimize the subscriptions.

When we ordered that 2012 Chevy Sonic, we specified that it have the "Canadian cold weather option package " that includes a higher rated amp hour battery, and a higher output alternator. It also has a bloc heater, and a battery blanket warmer. I added a 12 volt battery trickle charger that maintains a full charge in the battery at all times. I also coated the battery leads with liberal amounts of Vaseline to protect against corrosion. Once a year the battery terminal leads are removed and cleaned, and re greased with Vaseline. This includes the ground lead to the frame, and the power lead to the starter. In over 55 years of driving in Canada, I have never had a battery failure of any kind.

The engine is a 4 cylinder over head cam1800 cc fuel injected model. The block heater and the battery warmer are the key to long battery life in a Canadian winter. The block heater keeps the oil and the engine coolant at about 50 F regardless of the ambient air temperature. The battery warmer is wrapped around the battery case and keeps it warm all winter. Instant starts with no problems. The biggest reason for excessive engine wear is cold weather starts. It takes time for that cold oil to start to circulate upwards within the engine, and get to the places where friction occurs. If the engine oil is all ready at 50F it will move faster to the critical areas of the engine.

I agree with you. Amazing shelf lives. My husband said some spices get stronger over time and we did not throw spices away because it was past the best buy date. Remember when things didn't even have those dates?

@hollydolly I saw a doctor on a talk show who said medications are actually good for up to a year after their expiration dates. I also read something similar. I've heard of nurses even using injectable medication for up to 3 months after the expiration dates.

yes I've read that about the longer time after expiration... however I seem to remember there was also a list where you must not use beyond the use by date...and I have a feeling Paracetamol was one of those...
 
I date my purchases. The last time I was at the medieval slave trader was my last purchasing frenzy when I bought, 3 French hens, 2 turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree.

I wouldn't exactly call it dating, as we don't do a lot of socializing. :) Might as well throw a little bit of time traveling in also... :)

My wife does. On the big or expensive stuff, she puts a piece of adhesive tape on it and write the date on it. She also scans the receipt into the computer.
