If you do what is it. .How long have you been doing it ?
if you don't ,is there something you would like to do voluntary ?

I don't... I really don't have the time right now.. When I retire, I may.. but it will be with animals. I can see myself fostering sick or abused animals in conjuction with a shelter. I would be able to combine my nursing skills with my love of animals... the only thing holding me back now is time... and my uncertainty if I can handle seeing the suffering humans inflict on helpless creatures. It just may tear me apart.

Volunteer work doesn't pay money. It's a great thing to do, but when money is needed........

When and where I can in various capacities; educational assistance, feeding the hungry, various community organizations. When the body and mind says it's ok, I'm there. Presently work with an esl student.

When I first moved to Florida I worked as a volunteer for 5 years helping and training the deaf/hearing impaired by giving them free equipment to make their lives more meanful. I really miss that.

Pretty much all of my adult life. Started out on an auxiliary committee dedicated to raising money to support the Guide Dogs for the Blind, then as a youth leader for an outward bound club somewhat similar to the scouting movement. Later I have served on management committees for community managed child care centres in the roles of secretary or treasurer. I'm still on one committee but no longer an office bearer.

Working in computer security and tech support for a large areo-space firm for 35 years then bragging about it got me a lot of involuntary work helping my neighbors in our senior's only housing track resolve their computer/network problems. One even offered me her new laptop for free if I would just get it out of her house because of her frustrations with Win 8.1. And don't get me started with the problems seniors have with touch screens and arthritic hands. Fear of a 'mouse' can be daunting.

Thanks for your replies I think ive had more satisfaction from Voluntary work , i suppose cause it wasnt money motivated
and no pressure on to succeed .
Ive helped out at Youth clubs when i was younger , along with a Christian after schools club ,Ive Done serving Teas and other drinks for Church gatherings which i do single
handed . All are jobs which don,t need to much thinking about I know but i'm pleased i've served a purpose .My latest voluntary work came about accidently , while researching my family tree , i clicked on a link that said Volunteer just to see where it lead too ,,Well it lead to me getting a reply of thanks for the offer and now i am transcribing documents from 1800s to be put on computer for others to read ..

You know what Lady, one of my favorite volunteer assignments was one that didn't hurt my head, it was the one where I used to get up early to go put together the lunches at a homeless shelter. It was the camaraderie that made all the more rewarding meeting some of the most humble lovely people I could ever ask to work side by side with. I truly miss those mornings with those people and knowing we were doing something worthwhile.

The woman that led the group, (keys to the building,) is a high up bank executive and you never would have known this person's status, she is such a beautiful soul. This reminds me that I should send her an email just letting her know I'm still thinking of her and those ladies and how terrific I think she is. We haven't volunteered together in more than six years, but once and a while we'll say hello, just a lovely human being. I don't come across people like her as often as I would like, so, thanks for this thread, reminds me to acknowledge the special ones who have crossed my path.

PS you may all throw up now. :D

Volunteering for community work is very satisfying. I forgot to mention that I help out at a playgroup once a week. I work in the kitchen making sandwiches and serving morning tea and lunch to pre-schoolers and their carers. I don't even think of it as work.

My daughter caught the bug early. She is a nurse and early on she became a voluntary counsellor for Nursing Mothers, has worked to support the scouting movement and then served on her four children's Parents and Citizens associations for about 15 years. When they all left school she and some of the women she had become friends with decided that they wanted to continue working together so they inaugurated their own new chapter of the Country Women's Association. It was a bit of a hoot because they all live in Sydney, not The Bush.

My mum and her sisters set the example for all of us. Mum and Dad were both active in the P and C and later Mum and the aunts were very busy raising money for the Guide Dogs for the Blind, forming a new auxiliary for that purpose. It involved a lot of meetings and sewing goods to sell at stalls.

I donate healthy choice foods to MOW; some have diet restrictions and my work history helps me select appropriate food items for them. I, also, crochet for kids who are ill in the hospital.

I am on a sub council in our small community..
I joined the "Parks and Recreation" council about 4 years ago and simply love it..
I run a Hayride, community Picnic.. Free hotdogs, pop, cake, entertainment, games, music, hayride, etc...
I am in charge of the Ice & snow Sculpture contest for our Winter Carnival..
Joined the board of our local museum..
Became a director of the "Street Painting" event..

If one lives in a village like I do, you MUST get involved in the community...
It gives you an excellent feeling knowing you did something ..........
