Do you ever buy second hand items?

I have always enjoyed thrift shop browsing; it is fun for me. Have purchased really
unique purses and some cobalt blue glassware. :) And yes, some items I have
donated to a cause or need.

When I was a single mother, 90% of my child's wardrobe was second hand. I also had lots of friends offering me the clothing that their children had outgrown; I felt fortunate in that respect! I didn't really have to spend on her clothing until she started school. I also wore a lot of second hand clothing while in college. You can find some real treasures in second hand shops! I also have found a nice dining table, lamps, bookshelves and dishes.

Often, for certain items. I'll use thrift stores to buy curtains and tablecloths when I need fabric. And I bought some of my foster son's clothes there, just like I did when my kids were little. I bought a stack of little bowls for my cat's food and several juice glasses for when I weaned my foster son off baby bottles. He loved those cuz they looked just like my big-people beverage glasses.

Anyway, so, yeah, I do.

Do you ever buy second hand items? Do you ever donate to them?

Yes, I've bought several interesting second-hand items. I also donate various types of items.

How about you @PreciousDove? Do you buy second-hand items or donate to second-hand stores?

Definitely. I donate and buy. The hunt is part of the fun.
You are not wrong. This blazer gets many a comment, yet it sat on a stall at a vintage festival, all forlorn and unloved. At the start of the festival the asking price had been around £100. It was still there at the close. "You like that don't you ?" The vendor said to me. "It's certainly unusual," I replied, "but your asking price was a bit ambitious," I added. "You're right," he said, " I probably paid too much for it." Then he went into sales pitch, "your's for just fifty quid." "You'll be lucky," I answered, as though walking away. "What will you give me then," he replied. "Twenty pounds and that's your lot," was my hopeful reply. "Go on then," he said with a shrug of his shoulders, adding, "it might be a loss, but I know you will take good care of it." "Thank you very much!"

The vendor was right, I had it dry cleaned and then took it to my tailor who said that it was made to measure and very well made to measure indeed. My tailor also said that the fabric was rare. Striped material with an inner stripe was all the vogue in the late 1930's. Oh wow, this gets better and better. You want to see what all the fuss is about? Here's my second hand blazer.

I do buy from second-hand stores. After going to a town, before going home, I might stop at a second-hand store. To look and see if they might have, that thing that I want, which is not made anymore. I see things that they have, that I already have two of and need no more. What I am looking for nowadays is something for my wife. She wants a big porcelain-like cat, like the ones they made fifty years ago in the past. So, she can paint it for her niece, who saw one in a thrift store window far away, she didn’t have the money to buy it, for it was very expensive you know.

Why didn't I ever think of that? Usually I "kill time" in a restaurant or something.

Different towns have different things. I remember a thrift store in Portland, Oregon. Must have been a rich neighborhood or something, as everything was high quality.

In the town near where I used to live, the Value Village wasn't very good. But for some reason they had a very large selection of duvet covers at low prices. So I'd get about 8 square meters/yards of nice fabric for under $10. How much would you pay at a fabric store? 😲

I don't buy much of anything these days but in earlier times I bought a lot of used stuff. Cars, ham radio equipment, tools, books, furniture, just to name a few. Given my frugal nature, buying used just seemed to make a lot of good sense.
