Do you ever win raffles?

I won my first Kindle signing up for another senior forum that tried to replace Eons, the first one i ever joined. (Can't recall name at moment). I wouldn't have bought one (especially since that was before my eye surgery) but i found it useful enough to replace when i broke it years later.

Edit: Remembered name of that platform. It was Boomeon

During the NHL Stanley Cup final series, the Edmonton Oilers 50/50 draw went up to 9 million dollars. The winning ticket holder got half and the Edmonton children's hospital got the other half. Lottery or race track or casino winnings in Canada are TAX FREE.

Have I personally won? Yes about 5 years ago I won $2500 with the 649 Ontario lottery, and at a later date, I won a 60 inch TV from the Princess Margaret Cancer Hospital lottery. Right now I have tickets on the PMH cottage lottery, which has 3 grand prizes of lakeside luxury furnished cottages on lakes in the Muskoka Lakes district of Ontario, and the Toronto Blue Jays children's charity lottery. The lakeside cottages are valued at 3 million dollars each, and each one comes with a half a million dollars in cash, as well. JIMB.

The closest I ever got to winning was the N. Y. state lottery. You needed 7 numbers to win. I had the first three numbers and the last three numbers. I didn't have the middle number. And you had to have 4 numbers in a row to win anything. Otherwise, I spent a lot of money for losing slips of paper.
I won the Florida Lotto in 2020. I won $9mil, but the fed took 24%, minus whatever my tax rate was. I ended up getting a check for $6.48 mil. Sounds like a lot, but by today's standards, it isn't.

I never win things like that. If there were two names in the drawing, the other name would be drawn.
lol..I had t laugh because that's usually me.... but I did win a pig once... ...well to be perfectly honest it was actually half a pig, which was the raffle prize donated by the local butcher..:D

well have you ever killed a pig and seen how much meat you get from half of it ?....LOADS....the butcher hopped all up into family size portions, chops, joints, belly pork... all sorts..

trouble was I didn't like pork very much... and I only bought a raffle ticket to support the hospice the money was going t.. never thought I'd win..

So, what I did was called a friend who volunteered at the local old folks home.. and he took the majority of this fresh pork and gave it to them from me.. they were absolutely delighted with it..

You won $6.48 million dollars and you’re complaining? 😳
Oh, no. That's not a complaint. It just shows how much you can lose in winning a lottery. Then one day you read online that Jamie Dimon, CEO of JP Morgan, pays very little in taxes, percentage wise.

Depending on how much you make, you probably will end up paying a higher tax percentage than Dimon who makes about $30,000,000 a year.

you serious ? :oops::oops:
Yes, I'm serious. The Florida Lotto was your best odds for winning a Lotto in the country back then. I don't know which lottery it is now. Just so you now, I did spread some of it around. I always thought that if I won a significant lottery, which $9,000,000 really isn't a significant lottery compared to some of the lotteries people have won recently, but I was in a generous mood and I knew some people that needed a little help, so I helped them anonymously. I have no regrets.

It’s not often you meet someone who has won that much money. Thats a lot.

Sure you’ll get taxed. That like people who play in let’s make a deal and win new cars. Oprah gave away cars to everyone in her show one year and some people complained about the tax. It’s like seeing the glass half wonky instead of half full.

The lottery had already taxed the money before I received the check. About mid-January of 2021, I received a form (1040) showing my winnings and how much tax was withheld. When I sent it along with all my other tax papers to my accountant, he had to include it as part of my gross earnings.

A month later, I received a letter from Homeland Security that included another form I had to fill out. I was told that Homeland Security isn't sending out the forms anymore. They get whatever information they need from the IRS.

Congratulations. What does it feel like to be a millionaire?
