Do You Have a Dash Cam in Your Car?

Do you have a dash cam in your car? They’re inexpensive now.

They’re good for settling an argument in the event of a collision. Some can also catch a video of fender benders while you’re parked.

The only argument that I hear against one is the random wires.

Nope!

I’m kind of surprised that they are not a standard option on new cars.

I’ve thought about something that would keep an eye on my vehicle while it’s parked in the garage at my complex.

With my luck, a dash cam would always be looking in the wrong direction when something is happening. 😉🤭😂

Both of our vehicles have cameras. The first one was after a 2016 accident that totaled out my truck & sent me to ER. What saved me was the road crew who witnessed the entire accident & gave statements to the officer.

We had the second one put in the SUV right after purchase. My kid just got a new vehicle & her Christmas present this year is a camera.

Ours are installed by a stereo shop who does an excellent installation job. The cameras show a front & rear view that have excellent quality. The front view isn't quite 180-degrees, but I hope they come out with a camera with side views (seriously) since I was t-boned in the crash.

The camera has a microchip that can be taken out & viewed in a computer. That chip can be given to an officer if there is a need to. We keep spare chips in the vehicles in case they are needed. Hubby has the app installed on his phone that he can view what is on the camera.

When I got a new vehicle in Feb last year, I installed a dual camera (Front & Rear)
Cost was just over 400. Self installed, hiding all wires and integrating it into the fuse panel.
also comes with park assist and continues to record for a while when parked but monitors the battery voltage and if it drops to a certain voltage it turns off the camera.
I can monitor on my smartphone as well.

Either it is STANDARD or it is an OPTION. What is a standard option.

I've been thinking about this for a while but have not followed through. I fully agree that it could be invaluable in an accident. Guess I should pursue this seriously.
Can the cam be transferred from one car to another if professionally installed?

DD was in an accident earlier this year - a kid ran a light, hit a pickup in an intersection, caromed off that truck, slammed into my daughter, bounced off of her (she was stopped for the light), and hit the car behind her. Fortunately the car behind her was a Tesla who caught the entire accident on camera.

I'm not saying the kid could have somehow denied responsibility, but the video caught the full accident and was proof positive that the kid was at fault. The Tesla driver shared his video with all the drivers involved plus the police.

While the camera was a great tool in this case, the flip side is that factory-installed cameras may be giving a lot of info to Big Brother.

Who knows how much data gets reported to car manufacturers or entities with whom they may share car owner's personal details, driving habits, and what places they frequent? Those cameras record every movement...

Good question.
I don't see why not, especially if you take both vehicles to a shop that specializes in Camera installs.

OR, someone who is technically inclined could do this.

The camera system I installed in my vehicle, if someone were to look at it, they would think it was professionally installed.

My daughters vehicle, SIL installed the camera and it just irritates my OCD with the wires visible in some areas.

I've wondered about that also. Most new cars have both front and rear cameras, why couldn't those cameras also be used as driving dash cams? Seems it would be a fairly simple option to incorporate.

To answer the original post, no, I don't have a dash cam but have been thinking I should get one

I have one on my car, but my wife doesn't have one yet. However, I intend to remedy that this year.

I've fitted my one myself, but it's only a forward looking one, it doesn't have a rear view. I have the cables and camera, but haven't bothered to fit it. Perhaps I should see about getting it fitted though, as I came out of a supermarket last year to find that someone had scraped the rear corner of my car and put a dent in the plastic bumper.

Could we take this whole camera thing a step further for those of us unsure of how much camera is needed? Which appear to be pretty reliable.

I did read somewhere that even our phones can be used as dash cams. Not sure how excited I am about doing that one.
