Do You Have Matches of Any Kind?

I don't & further more I am wondering who sells them any more. I wanted a candle light dinner last night and had to turn the gas on the stove to get a light. Matches were readily available free every where at one time time. I went to three different stores and asked for matches with no luck.

I have a quart jar full of them and I use about one match per year, lol!!!

The major grocery stores in this area still sell paper and wooden matches.

These days I would invest in a Bic multi purpose lighter and forget the matches.

I was just in a store the other day and saw the old-fashioned box type of matches, a few different brands. I don't recall the store, but I thought it was interesting that the box mat..
WAIT!
I remember now!

It was at the ACE Hardware store here in town!

I have a metal (yellow and decorated with flowers) "Match Case", that was for the old box matches and it still has the box of matches in it. I have it hanging in my kitchen. It had belonged to my mom.

I have a couple of big boxes of the large matches that are probably 10 years old, but they still light. I also have some of the long wooden matches for lighting fires in fireplaces. I think those are even older. Usually I just grab the long lighter like the one pictured above.

Don't know why I am hanging on to those matches but if the apocalypse ever happens, I'll be the one who can light fires without rubbing two sticks together.....lol.

I bet the grocery store has some matches for purchase.

Still a few book matches left from years gone by. Most of a box of stick matches in the cupboard. Wife uses a Bic-style candle/charcoal lighter to light candles. Can't do as Lon does. All electric home so no gas stove.

Yes, we have stick matches in large and small boxes, some waterproof, also lighters and the large ones like in Bea's photo for lighting the propane stove when camping or the charcoal barbeque, etc. Haven't bought any matches lately, but I'm pretty sure they sell them at Walmart.

I probably have some match books in the cupboard, but I can't remember the last time that I needed a match for anything... I don't do campfires or cook-outs anymore.
And I've learned that people over 70 shouldn't have lit candles sitting around their house ..:nightmare:.. that's a dangerous practice.. too easy to forget about them and/or have pets knock them over, etc.
I had to explain that to younger family members when they wanted to give me candles as gifts. :wink-new:

This is what I use to light the charcoal grill..BBQ.gif

Somewhere I have a big box of wooden matches stashed away. There's also a plastic bag filled with inscribed match books that we had made up for our wedding reception. Can't remember the last time I used a match, especially with our multi-purpose lighter on hand.

 Sorry for the disturbance to this thread but when I was a kid if someone asked "Do you have a match?" the usual answer was,
"Yes. Your face and my bum."

We were very rude little monsters back then.

Back to the topic. I have a jar full of match boxes in a kitchen cupboard.
One of my adages is never venture into the bush without a box of matches, preferably waterproof, in your pocket.
And water.

I found the boxes of kitchen matches @ the 99¢ store.

I keep one in the kitchen & one in the bathroom.

Also a bunch of cigarette lighters on the patio.

"all electric home" cant make fire? not very imaginative hey? Three different stores and no matches, did you choose those particular stores i.e. candy store, book store etc just so they wouldnt have matches? maybe you would have better luck finding matches in a 'smoke shop' or the local chain store/service/gas station that sells tobacco products. hey!

Oh yeah, I remember hearing that a lot back in the day..:) It was worded a little bit different but had the same meaning.

Yes, we have matches and some lighters around the house. Mostly for some candles if the power goes out. And if the mood hit's me I'll light up some incense from time to time.

I have a few small books of matches that they gave me when I purchased a pipe at the one shop that smells so good. I forgot the name of the place but they have scented candles, all kinds of pipes, and misc. items. It must've been about 5 years ago that I was there.

Matches were kind of dangerous things to have around the house.

Kids used to take them and play with them and sometimes set the house on fire.

And then they would hide. Firemen tell me they would find them hidden behind a couch or something overcome by smoke.

The lack of matches now as advertising items like book matches are rare because smoking is no longer as popular as it used to be.

What is the difference between matches and a cigarette lighter? Children are attracted to both.

No difference other than matches especially the box kind are kept in the house and are easier to light for a child than a mechanical lighter which is usually carried around by smokers.

its that spark when you light it. Kids will strike one after the other. It's called playing with matches.

I have some matches stashed somewhere. Every once in awhile I use them. Mostly for my scented candles. I do remember my Mom heating up a needle, she said she was sterilizing it to get a splinter out.

Ruth, I still heat up needles to remove splinters.

As for lighters, when my nephew was about 7, he found a lighter and went into a back bedroom of their mobile home. He accidently set the curtains on fire, ran out of the room and closed the door. He went outside and didn't tell anyone. The mobile home was destroyed, but my sister got the other kids out safely with no one hurt..

I set the Christmas tree on fire accidentally trying to put a celluloid doll on a bulb. My mother managed to put it out.

Like it happened yesterday. The doll exploded. Had a necklace made of beads. Beads flying all over the place.
