Do you have some routines down pat?

I've been making the same breakfast for 24 years. I never thought of myself as a "routine" guy, but I have a routine for breakfast (2 eggs, toast sausage, coffee) I perfected my brecky routine over the years. From making coffee to putting the last dish in the dishwasher in 30 minutes.
Do you have any routines that you've perfected?

I am a creature of routine. Coffee, e-mail and the news in my home office in the morning. Salad for lunch unless we decide to go out for lunch. Gym from about 1pm-2:30pm. Back at home by 3pm to prepare dinner to heat up later. More TV on the couch (pre-recorded late night shows and crime shows). Dinner with hubby followed by TV. Forums later at night.

Sometimes I mix it up with a movie at the theater or a walk around the lake if the weather is nice.

Just having a schedule, however repetitive, has kept me sane during retirement.

I always go take an early morning walk before breakfast{ weather permitting} been doing it for yrs, just to get some fresh air, great way to start my day
I read the NYT {Mon-Fri}when I'm eating lunch in my apt. This routine has changed a bit since moving here The days I have lunch in the cafe,I'll read the paper after my nap
After I've had dinner& shower, read the daily Bible selection from the Upper Room, I start doing the NYT crossword puzzle I usually finish Mon& Tues, sometimes Weds, don;t bother with Thurs or Fri,too hard

I canot bear it, I really cannot stand routine... it literally drives me nuts..

The only one thing that I do the same every day.. is my morning shower and brushed teeth..even thatannoys me because i have to do it the same every day.. get up, eyes still almost closed, wander into the bathroom.. run the shower for a minute or 2 until it gets hot, wash.. dry.. brush teeth...moisturise, brush hair.. get dressed..

I hate the fact that it is a routine. but I can't escape it.. otherwise no...no routine for me...

  1. Tying shoe laces by finger feel alone.
  2. Taking off Levi 511 jeans legging by stepping on cuff with opposite foot.
  3. Turning on living room lamp in dark next to couch by feeling light switch.
  4. Driving my old Forester into narrow tight space of carport next to neighbors vehicle.
  5. Using my right hands/fingers to identify house keys, car keys, pocket knife, small AAA flashlight in right front Levi pocket.
  6. Monthly paper bill paying routine getting from cabinet checkbook, stack of USPS mailed bills statements, pens, clipboard, stamps, and tossing it all on couch I sit and process it all.
  7. Clockwise zigzaging isle route I take wandering through a nearby Walmart Neighborhood Market.
  8. The urban 6 street route I take driving to that Walmart Neighborhood Market about 3.6 miles distant.
  9. The sequence I use to power up this laptop Windows 10 computer and open programs and files.
  10. The complex sequence of Tripod and Head physical adjustments, Sony a6700 button actuations, EVF Menu selection actions, Blutetooth RF Remote Shutter Release button actuations, I repeat methodically to capture focus bracket image subjects.
  11. The sequence I made at a gas station yesterday, raising the hood release, raising hood, removing the dipstick, cleaning oil off with a bit of paper towel, pushing it back in the tube then out to check the level, getting a motor oil bottle, twisting off tearing off sealed oil container lid and using pocket knife on film seal, removing twist off oil cap, adding a pint of motor oil into my Forester, cleaning dipstick again for recheck, dropping hood, tossing empty oil bottle into trash.
  12. Adding some salt from a larger cardboard container into each of 2 small plastic mobile salt shakers.
many more

Could you eat the same supper every night for 24 years or even for a week?
I'll never understand how folks could eat the same breakfast day after day.

Breakfast is pretty much the same... coffee, yogurt with fruit, and either toast or porridge. I have several dinner main courses that I've discovered good recipes for, plus ones where I've developed my own recipes. I can also pitch in with DW to help occasionally with one of her recipes.

I have other "routines"... like checking my email. Or phone-calling my daughter in Vancouver every couple weeks. Or the way I handle snow management in winter. Or patterns of nurture & planting in the larger vegetable garden. Or things I usually do when I go to town (like spending some time in the public library).

Whatever works for people then that's their choice.. but for me..I just cannot figure out how people can eat the same meals day in day out..the same breakfast for 20 years..wow.. mindboggling.. don't you want to try something new ?

My ex M-i-L.. was a trained cook.. she was the head cook in a school... and she carried the order of the school meals over into her own home..in that every day was the same as the week before. Roast Pork , 5 Veggies followed by a dessert on Sundays...cottage pie with the leftover meat on Monday.. Liver & bacon on wednesdays .. etc..every day was the same each week.. fish and chips on fridays... she only veered from this when she took her annual holiday ( vacation )... otherwise everyone knew in her house what was for dinner , depending on what day it was..

Incredible to me..

Yes. For years I’ve had to take a huge non coated pill in the morning. Routine goes like this. Half glass water, 1 teaspoon, my I can’t believe it’s not butter margarine and the crappy pill. Put pill in margarine, use spoon to coat the pill with a thin coating and quickly swallow pill with a mouthful water. Only way I can get it down and it works great..usually. 😒

Dogs love routine so they get their meals at a regular time if I’m home and their treats. One dog has a heart medication that she needs at specific times twice a day for the past 18 months and the first dose is at 4 AM. She is now in heart failure so probably only has 6 months left. I will do anything to keep her having a good quality of life.

I set up the coffee pot the night before because I want to just hit the on button when I get up. I eat the same breakfast daily unless I’m going out to eat. Other things vary such as I shower whatever time works best that day.

I have a bowl of oatmeal and a cup of coffee every morning. And yes, I go through the exact same motions. It's kind of like the Japanese tea ceremony. While water heats in the microwave, measure oatmeal and salt, set pan on stove. Fire on. Put hot water and oatmeal in pan. Put a spoonful of butter in bowl. Turn fire down. Measure coffee grounds and place filter on cup. Put milk on table and turn on TV. Oatmeal ready in 8 minutes. Wash pan. Eat oatmeal. Clean bowl while heating water for coffee. Dump grounds in hot water and set timer for one minute. Stir coffee and pour in filter. Clean filter and drink coffee at the computer.

I am a creature of habit.

My morning routine is heat water and make coffee in French press, log into computer for a while as I drink my coffee. Print daily crossword. Listen to music (with more coffee) while doing crossword. Then have oatmeal and some sort of fruit. Same thing happens every day.

No. More towards the opposite of that extreme. Very process oriented from career and understand neural plasticity that reflects repeating actions to enhance skills and performance.

But I did at age 20 unfortunately experiment using the ADHD drug methlyphenidate.

Interesting question 🤠

I haven’t eaten breakfast since I left home. Unless my brother comes to visit and he fixes bacon & eggs his way. I do enjoy breakfast food for supper on occasion.

I have a generalized routine and I know I had better have the water bottle & Excedrin bottle ready and within reach when I wake up. I take my BP meds when I get back from the barn.

That is just about it where the context of the question is concerned 🤠🤠

I have several routines in various parts of my day. Morning is a routine which includes coffee and feeding my bunny. Preparing my meals is a routine I do daily (cooking, clean up, eating, washing dishes). Cleaning my bunny's cage and area is another I do in the afternoon. And then in the evening there is a bedtime routine which if I don't follow it "Rabbit" will let me know about it. Laundry day, errand day, bill paying day, etc. are all done routinely. I don't think having routines is a bad thing. It makes life easier to know I have everything covered.

Changing the bag on my Hoover. Thirty seconds flat.

Making big batches of sourdough crepes for the freezer.

Dip comb in water. Grab a section of hair. Roll it on a roller. Take a sip of coffee.
Repeat.
Dip comb in coffee. Grab some hair. Roll it, Take a sip of lukewarm hairy water. (ACK! ACK!)
