Do you judge musicians on their personal lives and actions?

When it comes to breakin' the Law, there have been a number of 'Criminals' who despite their convictions continue to ply their chosen trade in the fields of musical and/or Screen entertainment.
Drugs have always been a part of Rock n Roll, and the taking of such somewhat 'par for the course'
Whilst the decisions made on their actions, and your acceptance of such, these transtransgressions are; the on the whole, against the individual themself.
But would you / could you / do you / fel the same when it comes to affecting others?

As well as the Murderous:
Sid Vicious (self admitted) and Phil Spector
There are the Physical abusers, Ike Turner, Will Smith - Mental and physical assault,

There are the Sex Crimers:
Gary Glitter - Numerous counts of Sex crimes with children
R. Kelly - Sex crimes of exploitation with children
Jonathon King - Sex crimes with children
Tupac - 1st degree Sexual abuse
- and lest we not forget the fury there was against Jerry Lee Lewis 'underage marriage ('once upon a time ago)
  • Do your separate their Music/songs from your favour - OR,
  • Separate their music from their criminality?

If musicians have been tried and convicted of a violent crime, then I AM going to judge them as criminal. They don’t get a pass from me just because they are a musician.

If their being under the influence makes them provide a crappy performance, I simply would not pay to see them again
while still into their addiction. As was the case of Waylon Jennings for me and late hubby.

I really was a big fan of Johnny Paycheck until he was charged with his crime. I really do draw the line on that crime.

What they do off stage, privately, etc I don't pay to see, I pay to be entertained and enjoy their talent.
When they end up being a decent person in real life, such as Harry Chapin, that I will admire and applaud.

I absolutely am a BIG fan of Johnny Depp's acting ability. He is not a see the same personality in every role
actor. I taught my oldest grand daughter how to spot a great actor by doing a Depp Marathon movie week.
From 1st role of his to his last role at the time. She noticed his improvements by the 5th one we watched
and now judges her favorite stars the same way. His private life has no consequences to alter my life, he has to
live it, not me.
She and I are big fans of Cillian Murphy currently and even though I had already noticed him, it tickled me when she
called me to tell me "Grandma, CHECK out this guy! I think you will love his acting."

I wrestled with this dilemma during the Michael Jackson trial. I thought, what if he is found guilty? Do I turn off the radio every time one of his songs comes on? Well, he was ultimately found not guilty, but the question remained. Does appreciating the talented work or product of another individual mean you approve of how they conduct their life. This is a personal choice everyone makes on their own, but after giving it a bit of thought, I decided it would be a foolish journey to embark on.

If I watch a movie an actor or actress has appeared in that has had an extramarital affair, does that mean I approve of it? If I take advantage of a tax break made possible by a president I don't like, does it mean I approve of them? If I use a product made in China, does it mean I approve of all that goes on there?

That being said, If I really dislike someone enough, it can influence me to avoid buying whatever they're selling. Just being honest.

Yea, I see the musician as just another person. If I like their music, I remember stuff I find out about them. I can't separate the music from the musicians. Plus what passes for "good" for me is quite a bit off the beaten path.
