Do you keep your doors locked day and night? Home, Vehicle.

We not only lock the doors at night but I stick those door stopper security bars under the door knobs.
This discussion reminded me that I needed to clean the floor in the area where the stopper makes contact and I cleaned the “ foot” piece- the rubber part that contacts the floor.
The door props hold a lot better now.

I keep the door locked during the day. At night I use a door jammer placed against the door knob just in case the intruder has the keys. You see, my main problem has been with people who have the apartment keys. They have stolen such things as food, 27 music CD's, most of my clothing, damaged three of my guitars, stolen my check book, removed exercise equipment and tools, such as heavy-duty stapler, a wire cutter, clothing iron. They have also taken my family photos, typed novels and a manuscript involving my innovative ideas in reference to a board game. So they waltzing in at night and unceremoniously slicing my throat as I slumber isn't so far fetched. IMHO.

The door jammers I hear are very helpful, I just might get one @ Radrook.

Some people will do anything to break into a home, losing one's things as you
did is simply AWFUL.

I live in a retirement community. I leave the house door unlocked during the day, as most of the residents do. So it is unlocked when I take my dog Maggie out for a walk three times a day. Lock the door at night. Never lock my car, which is under a carport with three other neighbors. (My house is a two-level, two-bedroom cottage under one roof with two other cottages.) My daughter can't believe that I don't lock the car door. As far as I know, the community has never had a break-in of any sort.

Door jammers are very good at preventing the door from being forced open. But it must be prompt up firmly. Otherwise it might slide,. One maintenance worker caused it to slide as he tried to force the door open. That was approx. 5 years ago when I was far more patient. Then he reached in with his hand to try to dislodge it even more. Do that to me now and I will break every bone in that hand.

What one of course won't read on this thread, is an intelligent SF member whose residence contains valuable items ($$$$ safe, jewelry, electronics, etc) posting how they usually leave their doors and or windows open.
Why not??
Our names and addresses are not known

I don't have expensive jewellery but I have the usual smart Tv's etc that people have - and as I posted upthread

I lock the house doors at night and when we are going out. Not when I'm at home during the day

Live in the outskirts of a city on a main thoroughfare leading out of town. Houses abound with large lots. Have lived here all of my life, since the 30's and never had a break in attempt. House is unlocked during the day and locked at night. Six family members live here and we have 5 cars between us. They're looked and unlocked during the day aas they come and go.

Cars are always locked. House is locked and deadbolted at all times.

The doors also have heavy security screen doors that are likewise double locked. Front door has a tall security gate about 4 feet in front of it. Enter only with a key or by being buzzed in.

Expensive jewelry lives in a bank safety deposit box unless I'm wearing it for a specific event. We have a hard-wired, monitored alarm system that is set nightly and whenever we leave the house - even if only for a walk around the block. Plus 5 security cameras.

We don't flash new or expensive vehicles, valuable jewelry, designer purses, upscale landscaping, or give other signals that we'd be lucrative targets. In point of fact, we actually wouldn't be.

I'm supposed to...I try to, but there have been instances where I forgot to lock the door. My son has done it a couple of times too. This usually happens when we come home with bags in hand. But one would need the special front door key to enter the building(s) and the apartments in our complex have dead bolt locks, so an intruder (or even someone's guest) would assume my door is double locked and are not likely to try to get in. We are trying to be more mindful though and have been double checking.

I've also fallen asleep, purposely sometimes, with my patio door cracked a bit. There is a stick in the door to prevent it from opening enough for a human to even get his/her head through.

I should mention that my parents' house was burglarized early in their marriage, which prompted them to be very security minded from that time forward, and their children followed the pattern. They had a full-on monitored burglar alarm that covered every window and door starting over 50 years ago.

My security habits are hard-wired into me and have nothing to do with living in Southern California. I'd be equally cautious in rural North Dakota.

Best not to advertise stuff like this on the internet when you don't know who might be lurking.
