..or the internet , generally ?

The other day when I was in the surgery waiting room, I sparked up a convo with 2 women who were waiting to see their respective Doctors...both were in their early 70's..so about 5 or 6 years older than me..

One was bemoaning the fact that she had trouble getting a blood test and had to jump through hoops with forms.. as she waved one around.., and I told her that I always book mine online.. She said that she didn't have a computer and wouldn't know how to use it anyway.. and with that, the second lady agreed, that she was the same ...

Now these were not doddering old biddies.. they were on the ball women it seemed to me.. so I was very surprised to realise that out of the 3 of us there.. 2/3rds didn't know how to use a Computer..

Do you know anyone who doesn't use one after all these years since we've commonly had home computers , who is perfectly capable of learning..?

I know several people that have no interest in computers, iPhones, etc...

IMO a lot of it has to do with the type of work people did before retiring.

After retiring, it comes down to the cost and fear of failure.

A lady locally is in her 80's. She has no interest at all in getting a computer.

I have though added items she needs - the heavier ones - to my weekly online shop at the supermarket. That is of course a great help to her.

About 4 weeks ago I invited her to watch me do the order, she was well impressed. (I fluffed my feathers secretly) 😇

She then asked me ''Can you find this and that for me to look at''. Sure she will be more of a regular visitor from now on. 😊

I know a lot like that. The 40ish tech guy that does computer stuff for me told me that I know a lot compared to his other clients that are my age. I made a "Oh, I bet you say that to all the old folks" joke and he said, "No, really." The ones that I know who either don't even own a computer or have one (usually purchased at their kids' insistence) that's sitting gathering dust not only seem to have no desire to learn more (or anything!) about using it, they seem to be proud of not knowing anything about it. As a computer tech at work told me years ago, "Don't be afraid of your computer; it's just another tool that you can learn how to use; it's just a tool."

You might convert yet, Pebbles...(y)

I don't know anyone.. aside from those 2 women I met in the Doctors' waiting room...

I can understand people in the winter of their years not being able to afford it ( although using a public computer costs little).. or even thinking they can learn new technology.. but there's members here in their 80's and 90's who embraced it.. and are as cognizant as any youngster

Today when so much has to be done online.. certainly here in the UK..bill paying, Doctors' appointments.. Banking.. so much more, it just makes you realise how stunted their growth is.. and those without grandchildren to help out are going to be seriously disadvantaged

My sister just got a smart phone last month, she's 65. First she learned to text and now she keeps texting me questions about exploring the internet and saving pictures, etc. Her husband has never touched a computer or a cell phone and probably never will.

When I had a business I tried to go paperless by buying tablets so employees could access orders and instructions electronically. Two of the older guys wouldn't use them no matter how many times they were shown how simple the process was, they would ask another employee to print out what they needed.

I always laughed when I would see a couple of 80 year olds scrolling on cell phones but now it doesn't even catch my attention.

Good on your sister for wishing to learn ..small steps equals giant strides.. I believe when we stop wanting to learn then we may as well be dead..

what about you Carol.. do these people rely on you ?
The DAR: I made them a website for their chapter and had to instruct them on how to look it up on line! :ROFLMAO:
My husband: Anytime he wants to look something up on line, he says, "the next time you're on the computer, look this up".
My sister: "I learned how to open my e-mail! Yay!" I gave up. She's a lost cause.
My ex best friend: I had to post pictures on Craig's list for her when she was selling something. And take down old ones. I tried to teach her how to cut and paste, but she never got it. She would call me when she got errors on her computer and I had to tell her, keystroke by keystroke, how to resolve it.
My old boss: She never tried to learn. I couldn't teach her because she was always "too busy". All I ever got was, "take care of it".

This is the reason people won't learn generally speaking, because they have someone who will do it for them. I feel if those who refuse to learn knew that their only way to gain access to the Internet was to learn.. and with the exception of those who ''can't'' for whatever reason.. no-one should do anything for them online, then they'd be forced into getting with the Program
