I have a friend from Seattle who arrived yesterday afternoon. Seattle is a beautiful city with lots to do so I felt some pressure to impress her. So we entertained her in a way only Dallas could.
The weather is great right now, so yesterday we took her to the Dallas Arboretum and then to an outdoor barbecue restaurant, complete with country music. She loved it.
Today I took her to the JFK Sixth Floor Museum. She was 12 y/o when he was assassinated and is obsessed with it, so she was amazed to be able to look out of the window where the shots were fired and onto the Grassy Knoll, and to watch the videos and read the commentary about this incident that affected our lives.
We then went to the Holocaust and Human Rights Museum. It is hard to explain, but a few of the remaining Holocaust survivors have been filmed recently and have been asked thousands of questions so their knowledge will remain long after they have passed. There is a hologram of one survivor that (through AI) you can ask questions and receive detailed responses based on his experience. I've visited before and it is fascinating. I've included a video about it. There is also one of the original boxcars that was used to transfer Jews to death camps. It is always a sad and harrowing experience, but it is educational nonetheless.
For dinner, we took her to a fine Mexican restaurant. She was going to give us the leftovers but she finished everything!
All in all, she was blown away by how much Dallas has to offer. It was also good for me as well because I rarely venture outside of my 10-mile bubble so it was nice for me to see how the city has grown and progressed as well. Such a fun and educational time!
