Do you leave a small or large tip in restaurants? Or none at all.

I leave a standard 15%-18% tip, and more if the waiter/waitress has been unusually pleasant or attentive. I’ve noticed that large groups of people or those with unruly children often are demanding of the staff, and then leave substandard tips in addition to leaving their table and floor area looking like a battle zone…
 

I treated my honorary daughter to a birthday breakfast at IHOP last week. The service was so wonderful that I tipped the waitress 40% of the bill (including tax). I usually don't include the tax when figuring out what to tip.

PERFECT TIMING.... My wife was in the hospital for a few days, and they only had decaf coffee on that floor. So I stopped at a Starbucks to grab a pack of their instant coffee packs. At the counter, she rings them up.... +$12 And then asked how much of a tip I wanted to add !!!!!!!
I said "your kidding me" picked up the pack, tossed it back in the basket and walked out the door.

We don't go by a %, It depends on when and where and service. BUT we always use cash to tip.
 
There's always a tip for the taxi person (as they're very helpful with our shopping trolleys and a good conversation on the trip back, deserved!).

The takeaway food delivery person, always gets a tip as they're so quick and very polite.

Restaurants, it depends on the service, so it's been less and less frequent. Last trip, last year, the traditional bread basket had disappeared. Upon politely requesting bread, all we got was two slices of regular bread so badly buttered, it was ridiculous. They're now off the favourite list...

Just remembered, a friend of mine in early 80s, used this when service was bad. He'd out 9 pennies in the water glass, as a tip. Apparently, it was the manager's request to improve his servers... Those were the days, I guess 😂😂😂
 
Tipped a small amount just recently, service was lacking,
for my coffee, I have a free coffee card from my employer
that I use weekly. Also coffee at the drive through stand
was just awful...
 
We have something called "award wages" in OZ. Tipping usually means saying "keep the change" but that was before everything was paid by card.

Australians travelling overseas for the first time are absolutely bamboozled by the practice of tipping for service. We hardly ever get it right.
 
I consider 20% the norm and I tip on the tax. I know I shouldn’t, just habit. The amount can go either way, depending on service. If it was an inexpensive meal or had a discount, the amount is usually higher; they still worked hard.

It annoys me that a Bakeshop or similar, hands me the machine and I have to go through a couple of steps to not leave a tip. Or if I want to add something less than 15%, it’s even more complicated. My DD was furious when she walked to the counter with a bottle of wine and the CC machine had the suggested tip routine. They don’t even provide bags.
