Do you regret moving to Florida?

That's an interesting comment. I've checked summer temps for a long time between central FL and here in western NY. We typically get 5-10 days of 90 or higher per summer, usually with high humidity -- FL isn't much different except it is like that for months instead of a few days in July/August.

Also, overnight temps are much higher in FL. Here in the boonies it cools off quickly in the evening. Being at the eastern base of a hill, the sun disappears around 7:15 in June, then I have 2 hours of twilight. I don't have AC and I don't even have a fan in my bedroom.

You're right ,Old Dummy, but temps in the 90s are measured more in weeks than months and if you are away from the cities = all asphault and concrete = and live rurally with a lot of trees and grass, nights drop to somewhere in the 70s even when it has reached 90 during the day. Of course, AC and ceiling fans are essential. I'm comfortable with my AC on 80 so even on 85/90 degree days AC is not overworked.

But it isn't for everyone, thank goodness, otherwise my small, quiet, inexpensive, rural community won't stay that way forever.

We call it "the mean season" in Texas and the South. LOL.

Red above: Yes, I've noticed that when checking summer temps at my friends' farm near Williston.

And the other extreme: Key West, mid-summer highs usually 89-90 with overnight lows of 83-85. I like heat to a point, but how in the world did people live there before AC?

Have any of you grown up in the north, retired and moved to Florida but found out you don't like it there so much, and are considering moving back north?

I'm toying with the idea of buying a small house in The Villages or some place similar. I'm planning on flying down there this summer with my buddy to check things out. He and his wife have a house there (not in a community) and live there for 7 months or so per year, and come back here for the summer at their original house.

For me I would sell what I have here in NYS and would live in FL all year. Been at this spot since 1981 -- on a dirt road in the boonies, surrounded by big hills, right next to a burbling year-round stream. It's pretty nice, but there's a lot of work that goes into living here.

So here we are, more than a year and a half after my OP.

I'm thinking more seriously about this, for political reasons. My friends, mentioned above, had a small house built next to theirs, with plans on renting it during the winter. He wondered last night if I might like to buy it. Wow.

They are way out in the boonies (in the north, near Williston) and that's fine with me. I may go down in the late winter and take a look around.

I've had a place in Gainesville, and one in Weeki Wachee, all the while keeping my house in the Ozarks. I have a love-hate relationship with Florida. Sometimes, I love it, other times... not so much. I do know that in a few more years, I'll be heading down that way again as the property I have in Arkansas is getting to be too much for me.
You're right about Williston being country there Old Dummy. I spent a lot of time out that way when I lived in Gainesville. Especially liked that huge old flea market.
I suppose my next move will be a bit south of Tampa on the gulf side. Weeki Wachee was ok, but it is a little warmer down a little.
That pic looks very Serene. ...no beaches like that in Gainesville though. Just Heat and Humidity

After the latest hurricanes and the one hitting South Florida, I think people will move out because of the loses and insurance rates going sky high. I live in North Central Florida and was lucky with the hurricanes and now I am so used to the climate after 38 years of living here. But, now our area is becoming crowded with people coming here. I think I would like to move, too.

I actually regret not moving to Florida when I was Eighteen. I had graduated early, and gone to Technical school, and afterwards I just wanted to go back home. But my Grandparents had a place in Florida and invited me to come stay with them till I got on my feet and had a job. The school had good job placement in that state... And I so wish I had done that now. My parents had too much control of my life at home, and kind of still do to this day. They aren't bad at all, just, strict, I guess one could say.

Seeing how things are now, pretty sure I'd have left Florida later on.

No, I do not regret it. Florida is home to me. I've lived here for so long. We moved away twice ( for work) but we could not wait to return each time. No doubt that these latest and frequent storms have not be pleasant. No doubt that the old Florida is no longer, but it is home to us.

thankyou.gif

Do you stay inside a lot during the summer?
I live alone in a condo, so I don't spend a lot of time outdoors. There are activities for the residents of this 55+ community both indoors and outside. There are snowbirds who come here for the winter. There is no way that I would ever put up with snow again.

The one place I wouldn’t live is in The Villages. We are looking at property in Naples to move to from Polk County.

There is no way I would ever live in Naples, probably for similar reasons that you dis The Villages. But when I think about it, nobody cares where I choose to not live, probably goes for you too.

I was born in Clearwater Florida and I lived in the state for most of my life. I regret everyone that has moved to Florida because they have ruined my home state. Population of Florida in 1947 when I was born = 2.5 Million. Population of Florida today = 23 million. :(

The reason I chose Naples was because I wouldn’t have to drive anywhere. Naples has it all covered, including it’s own hospital or health center. Banks, grocery stores, doctors, hospitals, library, etc., everything I would need. Even golf and tennis courses and tournaments. And, the beach is close by. I just need to buy a new boat. When I left Clearwater, I sold my other one. This time, I think I’m either going for a Pontoon or a Catamaran boat. I only want to float around in the bay and maybe do a little fishing.

Spent Jan. through early April in Florida for a number of years. Never crossed our mind to consider moving there.
We'd then spend May-early July and Sept and October at our daughter's cottage in Maine. The other 5 months we were home here in Mass.. Worked well for us when we were a bit younger but now those days are behind us. Here at home we're surrounded by kids and grandkids and that is a blessing.

Don’t know if this is true, but with the warmer winters, I’ve heard more people are moving north. I hope this is just rumor.

Clearwater Beach and Sand Key are my favorite beaches in that area. It has become overcrowded.

Actually lived in Florida until I retired. Then moved. Florida is fine. But each year things go up and up. Taxes and insurance. To the point it was be becoming a focus of my time. Yes I loved the weather and the beaches but I can visit. I’m currently living in Texas but will probably re-locate next year.

For the original question. I grew up in Michigan. As an adult I lived in Florida but decided it wasn’t a good fit for retirement After living there for over 30 years
