I was in 3rd grade. It was a cute brown eyed boy named Johnny Zaletti. He sent his friend over to me to say " Johnny loves you and wants you to be his girlfriend" I told his friend " Okay tell Johnny I love him too and I'll be his girlfriend." So then at all the recesses we sat next to each other never talking, just sitting there while other kids sometimes sang the 'sitting in a tree' song at us. We didn't care we were in love. One day he spoke to me. He said " I'm going to marry you someday." I said " Okay". Then he said "Here, " and gave me 50 cents.
I was over the moon about that 50 cents and making big plans to fill a bag with candies. I went home and asked my step mom if I could walk to the store on the corner and buy some candy. She said " Where'd you get the money?" I told her my boyfriend at school gave me the money. She said " Well you march right back up to that boy tomorrow and give that money back! You tell him nice girls don't take money from boys!" My heart sank. I didn't want to be a nice girl, I wanted to be a girl with a full paper bag of candy.
The next day I gave him the money back, but I didn't tell him what I had been told to tell him. I said " My step mom said I had to give you the quarters back." He didn't hold it against me and we remained in love sitting quietly together on the playground the rest of the year.
At the end of the school year we were moving again. My father came in to tell me we were moving. I began to sob to him " We can't! I'm in love! I'm supposed to marry Johnny Zaletti!" My father sat down & said " Honey that's just puppy love." I sobbed even harder. We moved.
