Do you still smoke or did you quit?

For those that smoke, do you smoke inside your house or car? I know the trend is to stand outside now, no matter the weather. This is what my daughter does. She desperately needs to quit; I cant say anything.

My mother died at 52, a heart attack victim of chain smoking. Nicotine has been shown to be as addictive as heroin, and no one is more anti smoking than I am. Were it up to me the manufacture, sale, use, and possession of cigarettes, or any nicotine delivery device, would be highly illegal.

Interesting question. I'd like to add one more to it as well.

What do you do to not make yourself "stinky"? Especially those who still live with children.

There is a myth about about smoking addiction that I'd like to clear up.
I often hear people say, "I don't want to quit smoking; I enjoy it."
No one enjoys smoking. What happens is this: Once you're addicted to nicotine, you start feeling very unpleasant withdrawal symptoms when you don't smoke. Smoking again relieves those withdrawal symptoms & makes you feel good again.
So, you're not "enjoying smoking;" you're enjoying relief from feeling sick. And cigarette companies know this; that's why they add the addicting components to cigarettes.

I smoke inside while Michelle is gone but absolutely not while there's a baby here. We have Li'l K now, so I smoke outside. And I don't smoke in my car because we use it when we take Li'l K to visit family and to her appointments and shopping.

When I smoke inside, I sit in a comfy chair right by the sliding glass door, open, and there's a 2 ft tall air purifier on the table next to me, plus a fan at the opposite end of the room.

I do not condone smoking. This is not an endorsement. But I do seriously enjoy it. ( @win231 )

Before I step out for a smoke, I put on a ball cap (as usual) and my smoking jacket. Seriously. It hangs outside right by the door. Soon as I come in I wash my hands and face, or if I'm in a rush I grab a baby wipe and use that.

I was just speaking with my sister who is 65 years old and a life long smoker. I asked how much she smoked and she said between her and her husband three or so packs a day. She said they spend around $450 a month! My god I never realized it was that expensive.

The sad thing is her and her husband have never managed to get themselves financially secure, even though my mother gave them a free house 40 years ago( which they have let fall down around them)

I bet smoking has been their largest monthly expense their entire marriage. What a terribly sad thing to be addicted to smoking.

Interesting that some smokers will say, "I don't smoke in my house or car." Or "I protect my clothes with a smoking jacket."
Think about what that means: You don't want to dirty up & stink up your house, car, or clothes but you're willing to dirty your lungs, which you need your whole life. That is the face of addiction.

I consider Tabacco and its use to be a "Great American Tragedy"!

Over my lifetime I have watched most of my family and many of my friends lose their health and eventually die from a smoking related illness. One can debate if Tabacco use was the primary cause of death in everyone I lost, but you can bet that it was a factor in all the deaths.

I have lived through all the TV and Magazine advertising that glamorized smoking. I still watch many old movies where it seems everyone smokes, especially the strong guys and sexy women (The actors/ studios got paid by the tobacco companies to smoke on screen and in early TV)

In the early to late 50's the tobacco companies knew that their products caused cancer and heart disease. Many believe that big tobacco knew this as early as 1930. Yet in an effort to addict young men, tobacco companies donated cigarettes to support the war efforts for WWI, WWII, Korea, and Viet Nam. These were included in their food rations and most all of the young draftees were quickly addicted. Big tobacco has enjoyed that investment for many years, on the backs of many veterans riddled with lung disease and heart problems.

Has any greater epidemic ever been initiated on the American people? I don't think so! Isn't it time we stopped this madness? I am a big supporter of free market capitalism, but not when it is addictive and causes disease and death.

Let's not forget how many DOCTORS accepted big money to promote smoking. Doctors - who took an oath to protect & heal.........except when money is involved. Thinking people think about this before blindly following all their doctors' advice - including vaccinations:

I was in the supermarket the other day, and a woman walked past me, and she smelled strongly of cigarettes,..I'd forgotten how bad that smells, because I haven't known anyone who smokes cigarettes for years, .. even my husband changed to vaping years ago when it first came out, and vapes with fruit smelling liquids.. ..so that horrible smell of tobacco came as a 'ugh' moment for me.

I'm not judging anyone.. I just don't want it near me or in my home or car...

Started smoking at 17, quit when I was 30 because we wanted to have a baby and I felt I owed a child a clean, healthy body to grow in. Got pregnant 6 months later.

DH and I quit together with medical assistance (some meds that helped with the addiction part while we worked on the habit part). We never looked back. No apparent ill effects from those years of addiction - it's been nearly 40 years since we quit.

From the time our children were very young we underscored a the importance of a few life choices, including to never start smoking. None smoke or married smokers. Whew!

Those are actors and models. Not doctors demanding big bucks for their "endorsements".

I agree with everything you say.

But if Prohibition didn't work, the War on Drugs didn't work, Just Say No didn't work.....what do you propose we do to "stop the madness"?

Drugs pour into this country and are sold everywhere. Drug gangs and the Mafia make too much money.

Tobacco will become just another illegal substance sold right under everyone's noses, making criminals rich, sad to say.

I agree, and much as it angered smokers, I think that thus far the most effective way to have huge majority give up was to price them out of the average person's pocket.

I just checked the supermarket website, https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/search?query=benson and hedges

and a carton of the average priced popular cigarettes here.. are a massive.. ÂŁ72... for a carton of 5 packs of 20..a total of 100 cigarettes.. not 200...just 5 packs of 20... OMG..I'm in shock.. 5 packs of cigarettes at the cigarette kiosk is ÂŁ72... that's the equivalent of $95 US dollars..for 5 Packs of 20 cigarettes.. did I say I'm in shock ???:eek:

..and one single pack of 20 cigarettes is over ÂŁ14...sterling = to $29 dollar for ONE Pack of cigs...

I have new respect for smokers now.. they must be the richest people around to be able to afford that ...

Holy cow! $29.00 USD for ONE pack of cigs?
When I quit, one pack (of 20) was $7.00.
A carton here is 10 packs, not 5, and was about $65.00.

I'm going to look them up like you did to see what they sell for now.

I know most of the cost is tax.

Yes, that was one of my motivations for quitting. "I'm paying people lots of money for them to hurt me."
That's something else addiction does - interfere with logical thinking.

beg your pardon that should have been $19 dollars for one pack not $29 dollars... that's US dollars, and the price in Sterling is over ÂŁ14 per single pack.. and all the other prices I quoted ÂŁ72 sterking for a 5 pack carton are the current prices, you can see on the link I posted to the supermarket

Connecticut is at $9.52 per pack average, with $4.95 of that being state and excise tax.

But New York is at $12.85 per pack and a few cents LESS in tax than Connecticut! That's even higher than Alaska.

Here's a link for state prices for anyone who is curious. I could not find supermarket prices.

https://balancingeverything.com/cigarette-prices-by-state/
so that means we in the UK are charging the equivalent of $7 dollar US..more per pack than the USA..most of which goes in Tax...

the latest known figures are that around 13 % of people in England smoke...( that's only England, I don't know the stats for the rest of the UK)>.. The figures are made up thus...

Percentage of adults who smoked cigarettes, by ethnicity

All 13.9 146,897
Asian 8.3 9,514
Black 9.7 4,013
Chinese 6.7 636
Mixed 19.5 1,318
White 14.4 129,195
Other 15.6 2,155

ETA...here I've found the stats for the whole of the UK....taken from the latest poll..seems England has the least smokers

  • Of the constituent countries, 13.9% of adults in England smoked, 15.5% of adults in Wales, 15.4% of adults in Scotland and 15.6% of adults in Northern Ireland.
  • In the UK, 15.9% of men smoked compared with 12.5% of women.
  • Those aged 25 to 34 years had the highest proportion of current smokers (19.0%).
  • In the UK, around 1 in 4 (23.4%) people in routine and manual occupations smoked, this is around 2.5 times higher than people in managerial and professional occupations (9.3%).
  • In Great Britain, more than half (52.7%) of people aged 16 years and above who currently smoked said they wanted to quit, and 62.5% of those who have ever smoked said they had quit, based on our estimates from the Opinions and Lifestyle Survey (OPN).
  • In Great Britain, 5.7% of respondents in 2019 said they currently used an e-cigarette, which equates to nearly 3 million adults in the population.
