Do you swear?

Not too much or too often......and mostly when I'm in a lighthearted mood with others. Hardly ever when I am upset or angry.
 
Being of an age that, when a child, life was very different and swearing had no place at all, except in law courts. The verb to swear is, of course, a homonym, meaning it has more than one definition, as in: "I swear by Almighty God that the evidence that I shall give will be the truth........and so on."

On the other hand, you open the envelope wondering who you know who sends you official looking letters, to find that you have been caught on camera, jumping a red light, parking illegally, going far too fast through a speed camera, and have been fined........take your pick, and a right choice profanity escapes your lips.

Ronni, when she started the thread, asked what we thought about it. Back in my childhood it was a right of passage to use what was termed, bad language. Did you ever swear as a kid? Can you remember if your parents heard you, or maybe your profanity was reported back to them.

How I can remember my father's stern face. He never got angry, he just said that the richness of the English language was such that using a swear word clearly demonstrated the lack of use of the dictionary. He had me squirming, but then smiled and said: "Don't worry they swear in court." Picking up on his forgiveness I replied, "Yes but that's different," "correct, Dad said, "that's why swearing is a homonym." I must have look perplexed. Handing me the dictionary he smiled and said: "Look it up."
 
I never swore as a child.. that I can remember. My parents didn't swear either.. and my mother always said '' if you can't express yourself without resorting to profanity, then don't speak''...

She even brought down the hammer on words like liar or pig.. which is often what we'd call each other (siblings)... :D

I've made up for it since... :sneaky::ROFLMAO:

I am very circumspect around clients, friends who I know donā€™t swear (very few of those lol! ) folks I donā€™t know well, children (mostly..if their folks swear around them then I do too,) public settings, and you all!! I have an excellent vocabulary and I use it even more extensively when I canā€™t swear!

Around family I donā€™t even think about censoring myself because everyone swears!

I think Iā€™ve done an admirable job not letting loose here on the forum, donā€™t you? šŸ˜‰

Swearing isn't anything to be proud of. I'd never swear in front of my mother, and I don't in front of other family members. I'd not swear in front of clients for sure.

But with friends and whatnot - yes, I'll use the F-word when appropriate. However, I absolutely hate the C-word in any context, though it seems to be coming into common usage today (I've recently seen two horror films, and both of them used the word).
 
I have been proudly using the F word for at least 56 years but my son has asked me to be careful around his son, not to let it slip, and I am willing to do so. I thought I couldn't live without that word, but to my surprise I can.

Being a grandma comes first.
 
I don't know what happened to me. I was quite ladylike until DH passed away. Then I started using one particular curse word and use it almost exclusively on a regular basis, but only when I am alone. Never in another's company. I suppose Alexa hears me using the F word daily.
 
I think some of those words are quite malleable. One meaning in anger, quite another in the throes of passion. So much so that the listener can have different reactions depending on how their own "switch" is currently flipped.
