Do you think we will always have poor people?

I understand why we have indigents in the U.S., but why do we have so many people and children going hungry? Around my area, we have more food banks than I could count using all my toes and fingers. We donate to the County’s food bank twice per year, which the recipient has to show their Medicaid card to be eligible.

We also have many churches that have their own food bank. Of course, there are cheaters that make their rounds to the various food banks and try to sell the food for pennies on the dollar.

I am a bit skeptical about people actually going hungry. Even in the most backwards of states there are some welfare resources available, not to mention the church food banks. The homeless people I see quite frankly don't look like they've missed a meal, some quite the opposite. Maybe malnutrition is a better term, which the poor may suffer from, due to a lack of knowledge or mental health issues.

Most food banks try to follow a regimented diet of good food, but they also offer some snacks. I have often wondered “Are people really suffering from lack of food?” I remember at one time, the people living in Appalachia were very poor and starving. The government did get them back on track, but there are still a lot of very poor people living in that area.

No matter how low one's income a person can always spend LESS than he earns.
I respectfully disagree. For those who have very little income coming in, usually do not spend much, because they don't have it to spend. How can one spend less when in dire poverty to begin with? What more can they possibly give up until they become homeless, or put themselves in a state of starvation.

We had a pick up truck, SO had a job, we had $25 between the two of us. I was too proud to call home to send me money. You can give up a lot and learn a lot. I still plate for SO first.
when I worked serious medical collections I had a young lady come I and slam a 2k purse down claiming she lives in public housing and her kids' bills are their daddies problems.

OMG! $25 between the 2 of you? Your example is well said about spending less. How you managed to survive must have been painful! Food, Shelter, Health, etc. You seem like you were at the brink of starvation and homeless, yet you made it through it all. I am sure you had your reasons not to ask for help. You are an example of strength and endurance.

I too have watched the rich flaunt their wealth. I was working at a Walmart during the xmas season. I watched couples in flannel shirts, slight tears in their jeans, knit hats, buy and donate bikes, robotic toys, large dolls, etc to charities. Then towards the end of my shift, a man entered the dept dressed in fine threaded vest, luxurious overcoat, polished leather shoes, etc. I could smell his cologne 3-ft away. This man purchased a push toy car to put under the tree, as a donation. I am sure he went back to his job and bragged that he made a donation to society. Watching those who "give" and seeing those who "can give" was nauseating.

I am straying away from the original question: Do you think we will always have poor people?
---- My thoughts are as long as society "measures or compares", their will always be the poor and rich. Someone will always have more. And someone will always have less.

I am sorry that you had to go through what you did.

You seem to assume a lot about others.

I still think communes are the answer to eliminate hunger and homelessness. People in the communes would still be "poor" — as in not having any money, but at least they'd have food and shelter. When they found employment, they could move out of the commune, but until then, they could at least have some stability in their lives.

We do have some communes here in the U.S., and they're successful, but you have to pay like $25 thousand to get into them, so they're not exactly to benefit the poor.

I read a prediction a year ago that there will be poor people and rich people but the middle class will soon disappear.
I believe that prediction will soon change. Lower, Middle, and Upper Class are here to stay now.

And you've heard that the poor are getting poorer and the rich are getting richer. That's going to change a bit.

I believe the rich will get richer but the line between the classes will get fuzzier. A little more fare. And more jobs rather than less.
There will always be poor people but not as poor.

In this context, the "middle class" is pretty meaning less. The term was just an excuse for the rich - hey the poor might be suffering, but the middle class are doing okay! The destruction of the middle class is simply an instance of the poison spreading. As such, it's difficult to feel sorry for them - they're suffering from the poison they've ignored for too long.

I don't feel sorry for them. I feel sorry for Me, and those I love. All those nudniks and their votes........they will see what they have wrought. Assholes.

Sadly, people vote for themselves. They don't consider their kids, their grand kids, etc. It's all based on the cult of personality, and the moment. Look at the UK - voted for Brexit. Look at the demographics. Young people (17-24 voted in favor of staying in the EU by 73%.) While 60% of old folk (older than 65) voted to leave. People who were working wanted to stay, the unemployed mostly voted to leave.

Ain't no-one caring about community or others.

As a relatively poor person, I have my work cut out to balance my budget each month. This is probably true for the majority of people, so nothing all that special. But, recently there was that murder of the insurance CEO, that brought the issue of the poor being mistreated by the rich and powerful. This happened to me last week.

I ordered some Gummies online and when I took one I had a terrible reaction. My blood pressure dropped real low and I had cold sweats. This reaction should not have occurred, except that these gummies have melatonin in them, and I am allergic to melatonin. I took them back showing the manager the proof that they never mentioned the melatonin in their ad. He refused to take them back or give me store credit. Saying that was the states policy. $82 down the drain. Well, I can't afford that. So,

I took the matter into my own hands. I emailed the company that makes the gummies and explained what happened. Today he emailed me and apologized and said he called the dispensary, and had the store give me full credit for the transaction, and wished me a happy new year. Wouldn't it be nice if all of our "poorness" was handled in such a manner? :)

I am convinced that "poor" has been redefined in recent times. Expectations due to influencers on Social Media have gone sky high. I just got through watching a video of a date gone wrong. A guy took a woman to a restaurant, and she ordered six mains. He ran out on the bill, leaving her. The video was from her, saying she didn't understand why his "cheap" ass had run.

Then I watched some dating videos with people expecting - EXPECTING mind - that their partner made 100K a year. This drove home the idea that the term "poor" had been redefined in modern times. Earn average money? You're poor. Don't want a $300+ bill at a restaurant? Poor. Don't drive a 90K car? Loser.

I think Social Media is truly changing expectations, and we're in cuckoo land. I am so glad I'm old and not young, when it was okay to wed for love, and not finances.

Ah, yes, the Internet Influencer's 6-6-6 standard for dating and marriage: he must be at least 6ft, earn 6-figures, and have 6-pk abs.

Young adults are not buying that crap. I'm sure there's a handful of wishfuls, but most of them are saying Nah.

And most of those "'poor' dude walks out on the date" videos are scripted.

I saw one where the guy tells the gal she can choose where she'd like to go for their first date. She said "Shopping," so he takes her to Target, or whatever, where she fills a cart with school clothes and supplies for her 3 kids - and *someone's* recording all this, naturally.

The dude finds out his date expects him to pay for all that shizzle when they get in line at the register....aaand, he walks out on her. Not a 6-figure guy, obviously.

On the flip side, there's also a bunch of "flush dude walks out on the date" videos, too.

Because they are also afraid that Social Media is truly changing expectations, some Internet Influencers have posted videos going over actual data, such as: percentage of males under 30 earning 6 figures or more; jobs that pay 6 figures or more; educational requirements for 6-figure jobs; etc.

I agree it's cuckoo land out there, but I think the kids are going to be fine.

You won't believe how many very well educated "gimme recipients" of all ages are out there.
You mean people on gov't assistance? Except for the ones who simply don't want to work for a living, the cause of those people's poverty has nothing to do with their education.
