Do your pets have funny little habits?

Hi everyone,

I was watching my little dog earlier(Charlie) and it got me thinking about the funny little habits pets develop over the years. Mine insists on spinning in a circle before settling down, even if the blanket is already perfectly flat. I have no idea why but he does it every single time.

Do your pets have any funny or quirky habits that always make you smile?

Yes, my cats love to steal spots from each other. It is funny to watch!
Elsa loves to steal food from Elliot even if she has food in her own bowl.
Elsa loves to play hide and seek. She just peeks around the corner to initiate the game.
Elliot does not like to play. He comes into the room and plops on his side.
I can watch them all day long!šŸ™‚

Ha, Charlie does the same thing with his blanket! Elsa sounds like a little troublemaker. Does Elliot ever try to stop her, or just lie there and watch?

They both are rescues. Elsa was 8 weeks old when we got her. We thought she might like to have a friend, so we adopted Elliot. He was 1 year old and had live in different shelters from birth. Elliot is very low key and rather submissive. We have to control Elsa at times because she likes to take over but she is not a mean cat.

Elsa is more of my cat and Elliot is closer to my husband. They do have their spot on the couch. Elsa likes to sleep on top of the sofa, Elliot likes to snuggle with us.
For the food, they get fed 4 times a day. Elsa will let me know by standing in front of the pantry door, meowing like she has not eaten in 15 days! This alerts Elliot that comes to the rescue and opens the pantry door! I supervise the meals to make sure Elliot gets his share!

I think most dogs do they circling around thing before they lay down. Ours do the circling around thing and digging at the blanket or dog bed thing before settling down. It’s like there’s some invisible sand there that they have to smooth out first.

Our dogs have all kinds of silly quirks but I guess we ALL do to some extent.

When Audrey moved in with me around a year and a half ago, she had all kinds of odd habits. She wasn't playful, though, but recently it's like she developed a game:

she picks up one of her pom-poms in her mouth (see image), runs into the bathroom, somehow tosses it over the edge/side of the tub/shower, and then runs around meowing waiting for me to go get it for her.. 🤣

P.S. Audrey is a cat

Mine will also spin when playing with other dogs. But one of the most useful is following at heel without being asked. My current dog Ember learned it from my last dog, Smokey shown here at age three doing what he did his whole life without being asked.

The other thing he taught her was the joy of snagging thrown balls out of the air. Ember has never been as good at catching as he was but she has added her own talent of jumping up high to make the catch.

Bugsy has this funny little habit of carrying his toy between the first and second floor, and he "announces" it by meowing while it is in his mouth. We call it the "dinner show" because he usually does it while we are having dinner so he has a full audience. We always fall all over him to praise him for his cleverness.

He also opens cabinets when he gets bored, with his partner in crime Andy closely behind. They are a bonded pair, but he is definitely Top Cat and Andy is along for the ride.

I have had 10 dogs in the past 22 years because I’ve rescued a lot of older dogs and all of them has spun around and then dug before they settled down in their bed. I read that’s an instinct left over from when they were wolves.

The point back, then was to bury themselves slightly by digging themselves a little hole where it was safer to sleep from predators.

But the one thing I notice when they do their little walk around that is the most obvious, is that they are smelling the area for something. Head down and nose to the ground. What are they smelling for?

Beautiful doggie!

He has a lot of fine hair that insists on pointing to the sky. Grooming doesn't stop it. The one I had before was a better looking Golden. I know it's not polite to point out your dog's flaws, but I don't think he's going to read this.

But where he does shine, is that of the three Goldens I've had, this guy is the easiest to train, and the most loving. In that he amazes me. He doesn't leave the yard and go on days long walkabouts like my others, who were really bad about that, sometimes ending up at the pound. He's wonderful around young children, but his exuberance could annoy non dog people. Most kids do seem to be drawn to him.

He's nothing like the dog below, but for most people, that's not why you buy a Golden.
