Does Anyone Use A Single Cup Coffee Makerli

I use this Black and Decker one in my van RV and really like it. It has a small mesh filter that's easy to clean.

The reason I went with the Black and Decker instead of the single portion coffee containers is that the coffee is so much more expensive packaged that way and the little containers--unless you buy refillable ones or biodegradable ones--aren't environmentally friendly. In 2014, an Atlantic article stated that used Keurig cups end to end would circle the Earth 10.5 times.
 
we do in the afternoon for flavored coffee and just one cup, use coffee pot in morning. wife will make one cup of tea or hot chocolate, we like it.
 
My wife doesn't drink coffee and I only drink a couple cups a day. I put water in a measuring cup and heat it in the microwave. Then I stir in a measure of coffee grounds. Next, I put some water in the cup I'm going to drink out of and microwave it for one minute. This acts as a timer for brewing and pre-heats the cup. I dump out the cup of water and place a plastic cone and filter on it. I give the coffee a stir and pour it in the filter. Since it's a suspension, it goes through fast. While it's filtering, I clean the measuring cup. When it's done I toss the filter and rinse the cone.

The whole process takes less than 5 minutes and I have a fresh cup of coffee and no pot or machine to clean up.
 
I use a Keurig capsule machine that does 8, 10, or 12 ounce cups -- just press the size button you want, insert a capsule, put a cup under the spout, and press a button. The water tank can be filled in place with a pitcher, or removed and filled at a faucet. My personal preference is San Francisco Bay French Roast, but any Keurig capsule will work. It's a very simple process, and a light flashes if insufficient water is in the tank, but I can't say if it would be a problem for an individual with a sight issue.

I'm not sure why they give you four. We're still on our first one.
 
I still have a single cup coffee maker floating around here, but never use it. Didn't like it from the outset. I subsequently have been using a 5 cup Capresso coffee machine and I love it. When I want a pick me up in the afternoon, I have a pour over set and make one cup, which is great. I don't know which would be best for someone sight challenged, but worth trying a couple out.

The Keurig has push button activation. My mother was legally blind and I think she would have been able to use it - even to choose the strong version. Just dump the water in the side compartment each time its used like Aunt Bea says and the vision impaired person should be good to go.

This is the one I have. I just fill the water reservoir then turn the dial to 1 cup put down the little cup holder under the grounds holder. You can look at different things on the left side.

I make a 16 oz cup first thing in the morning. It uses #4 paper filters that I threw in the trash. Would be easy for him if you put a bright nail polis on the one-button he would use all the time.

I've made iced coffee or iced tea as it has a program for that. It's a little pricy but I've had mine now for 5 years & still going strong. There is a light at the bottom that tells you when it needs descaling or cleaned. I use white vinegar to do it.

Does that help seeing the water ? Maybe I'll try it. I have some safety paint out in the garage .

I use a percolator , and have to use a flashlight to see the measure lines inside the darn thing . I don't think a dot of paint will kill me in the perc ?

Can you reach the water line inside the percolator with the tip of your finger?

If you can, pour in enough water to make your dry fingertip wet.

If I were you, I’d designate a large measuring cup to hold your water. Figure out exactly how much you need and just fill it and then transfer to your perc.
 
@rpg, another suggestion is to put a mark on the outside of your perc. Put your finger on it and when the cold water reaches the desired interior level, you’ll feel it. Not as accurate though.
 
Thanks to all of you. Some of your ideas may help out but the truth of the matter is my
wife has no business being in the kitchen. She not only can not see the numbers she
sits the microwave or oven, she can’t see the numbers on a carafe or a measurering cup.
She’ll burn up a frozen dinner or cook a sausage patty almost raw. I have fears we’ll burn the house down. It's really more than coffee.

Why don’t I do it my self or some of it, you asked? I’m on oxygen 24/7. I can’t be around fire.
Oxygen and fire, even a cigarette, makes a fire so much hotter it can kill or disfigure
someone in a moment. I spend my time in a wheelchair or a comfort chair in front of
a tv set. I can no longer walk more than a few feet and am unsteadt, subjecting to falling
or passing out because my ticker will notpump enough oxygen tp my brain or kidneys or they tell me, to other major organs. In reality, I am useless and must be cared for. My wife also
needs care.

We have some help that sweeps and mops the floors, but now we needsomethat can also cook for us or cook some things ahead so we could warm and serve. It’s a problem we are trying to
remedy our situation some but funds ate limited, otherwise there might not be a problem. I’m
not trying to write a negative narrative have someone feel bad for me or wallow in self pity. I guess laying the situation out so I know what it is and can discuss it or answer questions to inquiring minds who might be-trying to help. And actually writing about it lessons my
frustrations and worry. I’ll work itout but it may take a while. Cheers.

This sounds serious enough to make a move to assisted living or having someone come in to evaluate your situation and explain available options that would allow you to continue living safely in your home.

Please contact your county office on aging to see what types of services are available in your area.

Also, contact a local organization for the blind. In this area, we have a group called AURORA that will come in and evaluate the situation. Offer tips on how to manage household tasks, money, and provide free or low-cost devices to help people manage low vision or blindness.

Please spend a little time with us each day and let us know how things are progressing.

That's awesome, Irwin!

Hundreds of thousands of the little plastic cups that the grounds come in are being found in the ocean. So I hope everyone who uses these coffee machines will start buying the grounds and those re-usable filters separately.
