Does anyone use Tahini?

As I have mentioned in another thread, I want to try making hummus from scratch. All the recipes I see call for Tahini. I have heard of it, and have seen it. But would like to know more about what other things I can use it for, before I buy it just for the once in a while I may make hummus. Any input?

Marie, I use Tahini but I make my own. I like it better than the store bought and it is very easy to make. I do of course use it in Hummus but I also use it in recipes. As it is sesame seed it blends well in some oriental cooking.

If you want to make your own it is very easy but you do need a blender or something similar. I have a tiny food processor that I use for small things. it is simply the seeds, spun to paste then add a little oil to get the texture you want. I prefer the sesame seeds to be de hulled as I find it much smoother but if want the roughage you can use either,, and you can use whatever oil you prefer to blend with, but don't use sesame oil it makes the Tahini too strong. you can toast them a little or not if you prefer.

You can just make a little and don't have to worry about using the bottle up and then your whole hummus is from scratch.

Thanks, Jeannie. I do a lot of stir frys, so I may just get some. I will try making it too. When you have an open container, should it be in the fridge? My husband said he would buy me a small food processer as I want to start home making things like this.

Baba ganoush (dip) calls for tahini paste, too.

Recipes vary somewhat but the most important thing is to char the outside of smaller eggplants on a grill or over the flame of a gas burner or under the broiler.

If you like hummus you'll love this! It has a slightly smokey taste. Some recipes even suggest adding chickpeas too, but always garlic, fresh lemon juice, tahini and olive oil- besides the mashed eggplant. It's easy with a food processor!
