Does getting older make you feel tired and achey?

I feel so tired (73 yrs) probably from taking care of my sick relative and my elderly cat that keeps me up at all hours. But my Dr keeps trying to get me to take thyroid med, but I don't like the side effects. Is it normal to feel tired and achey alot?

Not really, although age does play a part. I will say that if you get your thyroid straightened out you'll feel a lot better. Also smokin will make you feel bad. Maybe you should ask your doc for a full physical with blood work and all to get to the reason.

Hope you feel better soon.

Hi Jane: It must be terrible that you feel so tired and achey. Maybe you should get your cat's thyroid checked because my son was driven mad by his cat who used to keep him up most nights. It turns out the cat did have a thyroid problem and was put on medication to calm him down. When you feel tired just go for a 20-minute walk and try to extend it every few days, you'll be surprised how refreshed you'll feel when you get home.
I've been walking for a number of years now. I have an app on my phone that has a step counter on it. I try and extend my steps weekly. They say you need to do 10,000 a day., and only yesterday I managed 5081. Now bad for an 80+. I don't do this every day, but I like a challenge.
Or maybe you could join a walking group. Good Luck with that.

What kind of side effects does the thyroid med give you??

Thank you.

I think it might give me some insomnia, but honestly I'm supposed to take it 30 min before breakfast, then I'm supposed to take metformin after breakfast. I'm good about my BP meds though.

Hi Jane: Depending on finances and the relationship to your sick relative, being a caregiver can be emotionally and physically draining. Insufficient sleep compounds the problem of feeling tired all the time. If possible, try to take some time to assess whether any changes can be made in your situation. If your thyroid is low, you can make dietary adjustments by consuming food that supports the thyroid. There's a lot of information online about this subject. I'm just taking a guess about your cat, but if they aren't getting attention, that may be one reason for keeping you up at night. I hope this helps.

That is very good advice dusty. Last Christmas my wife started to feel tired much earlier than usual, by January her fatigue had become a serious worry. She made an appointment with her doctor for a full check up. The doctor found an unusual heart rhythm and sent her for further investigation by a specialist. It was discovered that her heart muscle was okay but the electrical system was out of sync. It was that which was causing her fatigue. She is currently recovering from surgery, still gets tired but slowly, slowly she is recovering.

Take Dusty's advice Jane, you may not like what your doctor could diagnose but at least you will be aware and, like my wife, who is just a year older than you, be treated for it.
