Does knowing an entertainer's sexual orientation affect how you view their performance?

My knee jerk reaction would be to say no, as so many here already have, but that wouldn't necessarily be honest. We can claim it doesn't make a difference but on some level, with all of us, it does. Sure the degree to which it affects our viewing of an actor or actresses performance may vary from person to person but it is there. I don't want to know their sexual orientation or preference unless I'm going to be in a relationship with them, which is highly unlikely. Coming out may liberate the individual to some extent but it does little if anything for the masses. It is a private matter and, in my opinion, should remain so. Sort of related, there was the actress who claimed to be gay, then went on to marry a member of the opposite sex. I just found that to be rather interesting. Rest assured, prior to entering into a relationship with any of you ladies, I will divulge, and my wife will testify, that I am straight !

yes. for me it does actually make a slight difference. It is on my mind when I see them in the movies..the times may have changed but this doesnt need to be in the publics eye all the time. like in some countries bathroom facilities are far and few between so seeing someone doing it in the street becomes the norm. you think that should then be the norm in this counrty??

Uh, maybe. If I saw Ellen DeGeneres portraying a character which was involved in a steamy love scene with a man, I couldn't help but recall that she was gay, couldn't help it. Same with Rock Hudson, Lovin' on all the lovely ladies just doesn't quite seem real, in light of the knowledge that he was gay.

I didn't know Tom Cruz way gay.

Don't know who "Young Sheldon" is.

That's why it's called acting.

Actors pull from within themselves alot of what goes into the character they portray, but the audience's perception of the portrayal is the proof of the pudding.

For instance, when Rock Hudson's was revealed, did your enjoyment of his acting change?

No, but that's not a good example for me because I never cared much for Rock Hudson in the first place.

However, Kevin Spacey is an outstanding actor and it doesn't change my opinion of his work in the least now that he's come out.

The same goes for Jodie Foster.

Maybe only if if I had a crush on the actor but otherwise no.

I always thought Jodie Foster was hot. And I still feel the same way even though she has come out as gay. In fact, if she'd give me a chance I'd hop in the sack with her in heartbeat even though she is gay.

Jim, You couldn't pay me enough to sit through another Tom Cruise movie. He's so egotistical. Not because of anything sexual,
but he has too many close ups of that face of his. (Personally, I think he needs some rhinoplasty work to be done on that face.

Never been as impressed with Tom Cruise...as Tom Cruise is impressed with himself.

The Scientology connection doesn't earn him any points in my book, either.

That said, however- I do forgive John Travolta for his Scientology affiliation,

so I guess my dislike of Tom Cruise has more to do with his personality.

I never knew Tom Cruise was gay, wasn't he married to Nicole Kidman?

Tom Cruise is gay? I agree with you on what you said though. I don't care for Tom Cruise or Scientology but always liked Travolta...at least in his younger years.

....sigh....

He (Tom Cruise) is NOT gay.
His name got tossed into the discussion because of his religious beliefs, and some people just don't like him.

I've always liked Tom Cruise and his movies/performances.

Also, Kevin Spacey never came out because he was never in - he is NOT gay. I have no idea where that came from.

As far as Rock Hudson, I enjoyed his movies and thought he was handsome.

I never really consider someone's sexuality when it comes to entertainment. I think it is much les relevant now than it was when Rock Hudson was discovered to be gay. I think the issue for him was that he was profiled as a very macho film star with women falling at his feet. So, he was being boxed into a corner to some extent. That must have made things very difficult for him and his audience.

But nowadays? What does it matter, really?

Why? To show her what's she's missing? :):)

It's just a fantasy of mine.

Realistically I'm going to have to settle for watching "Stealing Home" tonight.

It's been many years since the last time I saw it.

I can rent it on Amazon for 3 bucks.

Cruise is not gay, just an arrogant ass with his belief in Scientology.

Nope. Don't know, don't care, makes no difference in a good acting performance that I can see.

One of our friends was kidding me recently, saying, "Hmm...how come you have so many LGBT friends, anyway?"

I just laughed and shrugged. "Hey, three of them were straight before they went gay. Wasn't going to change my being friends with them."

Wow. Such logic.

So.........good-looking men who are professionally successful, have a lot of money (millions), aren't currently married, but have been married and fathered children, AND follow a religion/faith that someone disagrees with.....must be gay??? Seriously?

Scratching my head and :lofl:

Not in the least. Since I never expected to get sexually involved with anyone famous, their orientation has on affect on me at all.

The "must be gay" wasn't part of the train of thought, and there were no conclusions drawn in the fashion mentioned above. Posters stated their dislike of Tom Cruise to be due to his arrogance.

But, the gay allegation has been all over the internet, Wikipedia's article says this:

During Cruise's marriage to Nicole Kidman, the couple endured a great deal of public speculation about their sex life and rumors that Cruise was gay. In 1998, he successfully sued the Daily Express, a British tabloid which alleged that his marriage to Kidman was a sham designed to cover up his homosexuality.[SUP][122][/SUP]
In May 2001, he filed a lawsuit against gay porn actor Chad Slater. Slater had allegedly told the celebrity magazine Actustar that he had been involved in an affair with Cruise. This claim was strongly denied by Cruise,[SUP][123][/SUP] and in August 2001, Slater was ordered to pay $10 million to Cruise in damages after Slater declared he could not afford to defend himself against the suit and would therefore default.[SUP][124][/SUP]
Cruise also sued Bold Magazine publisher Michael Davis, who alleged but never confirmed that he had video that would prove Cruise was gay. The suit was dropped in exchange for a public statement by Davis that the video was not of Cruise, and that Cruise was heterosexual.[SUP][125][/SUP]

To be honest, I like actors for only their first movie. You don't know them, so they are believable. I hate it when an actor's name is over the title of the movie. Ya know, they get "STARring credit" That means every scene will be that actor reacting. The actor will be in almost every scene, and the story will revolve around that actor. When you've got all unknowns, it's the story that matters.
