Does this painting appeal to you?

No, I don't mean the rowboats. What I can't decipher is the two tall structures standing in the water. The one in the middle of the picture looks like a huge chess piece! The one over toward the right looks like a conical formation of some sort. The pointy reflection in the water doesn't seem to match what's above it.

Is the artist being deliberately vague, or am I missing something?

It's not framed properly. It's all frame and no painting.

A frame is supposed to enhance a painting not take away from it.

Those type of paintings have to be viewed live in order to properly assess it.

Yup

Nice frame, though

I think it's supposed to represent a dock or pier.

I like the painting, it's peaceful. I'll give it a 7. Debodun, have you had the painting appraised? The frame suggests it might be worth something.

Yes, I sent pictures to a local antique dealer and appraiser. Here is his reply:

Thank you for sending the images of your painting. These were popular c. 1900 with little demand today. The painting would currently sell readily for $20-40. Unfortunately, it is not something that we can help you with.

I like the castle and it's a very nice frame but seems a bit large for the picture.
I give it a 5.
