Does your country love you?

Whether my country loves me I know not, but the exchequer, that's the word we use for the taxman, must be overjoyed. Ten years after the official retirement age I'm still working, that means that far from being a liability, I am actually a tax asset.

I don't believe that a country or government is capable of love, compassion maybe, but not love.

Title. Does your country love you? Mine doesn't love me. Many others here feel the same at this time although they may not be members of this forum.
Of course not, it couldn't care less if I live or die unless I'm paying into the Tax pot.... the day they send a condolence card to my family when I pop my clogs will be the day we know this country cares.. but that said.. whether they care or not, I was born at a time when there was much more of a care given, so now I'm pleased I'm not just beginning to grow up in this country...there's been enormous changes in the 60 odd years I've been alive, as there has for all of us, some very good for some, some very bad for others...

Excuse the bad quote... The past is a different country, they certainly did things very differently there

This is an excellent example of what I mean. If you're not happy with crumbs, it's your fault for being unhappy. That's such a crock. My govt has made the average person miserable every day for the last 20 months and then blames us for things that are not our fault on top of it. Sorry. It would take a better woman than I am to find happiness in this mess.

Apparently.

This is what I mean also. It's not that we want too much, it's just that we do remember better times. There have been enormous changes in our lifetimes, few of which have been for the better. We're just beasts as our govt sees us. I may think it's bad here and it is, but it's equally bad globally. From what I've heard the things going on in France and Italy are so terrible it doesn't even make the news in my country. Canada is so awful I can't even talk about it. And it is sad because of this. There is nowhere to go anymore to escape this.

Seriously...
We the People of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity..
We all had to memorize this ditty, without giving thought to what it means. We the People were the framers, which were the well bred, well read, well fed and well wed and was developed in a time where the masses were rising up and was intended to placate the masses and keep the framers in power.

Nothing has really changed, although at times some people have awakened and screamed that some right that never really existed beyond their imagination... is being taken away. Then it passes and they go back to sleep.

I thought this thread might be another complaint thread about the deadly worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. <sigh>
Your country made sure all Americans had access to life saving vaccines, not all countries are afforded that. You can call that love if that's the word you want to use.

Seems like if one is not rich, powerful or a big corporation, one cannot expect to get much love. There are people who have died for this country....are they or the loved ones they left behind shown love? There are ex military men who's minds and bodies have been adversely affected because of the horrors they saw fighting in wars for the U.S. Upon discharge, how much love and appreciation were they shown? Many can't even get the help they need.

I walk this ground with a very deep appreciation for living here. I have been very fortunate with the opportunities Uncle Sam has provided me. So yeah, I think he likes me a little bit..

I feel the same way Davey. Since I was a baby my mother was able to have me get all the vaccines necessary to protect me from serious diseases. I was able to be educated in good schools. During my working life, I have been able to hold a steady decent paying job to pay my bills and help cover my healthcare expenses. Now that I am retired, I make due with programs like Medicare and Social Security. Life is good in America, not perfect, but damn good.

I never thought of my country as a person who loves me. I don't think a government can love people. It can take care of them, like those who are receiving Social Security and Medicare that helps them live a comfortable retirement. It can enforce laws that help us stay safe in our homes. Besides, the government changes hands every few years. Rarely is a president around for more than 8 years. Rarely is a person re-elected if people don't like their work. But I have also been disappointed in some decisions our government has taken, and I truly think we shouldn't rely totally on the government to make decisions for us. We know best what is good for us. We are better off that way. We are no longer children, told what to do. We have brains, adult brains, that make our own decisions. The good thing is that we have choices in this country (as compared to a communist country).

I also look around at other countries and am glad I am living in the U.S. It has given me many opportunities to grow and learn and get ahead. I would not have had that in the birth country of my parents.

So the answer is, I love my country.

I never expected the U.S. to "love" me. All I ever wanted was a decent place to live, and the opportunity to build a lifestyle that meets our needs.
In that regard, I am quite satisfied. Compared to what people in many other nations have to go through, I think we are quite well off. Sure, there is always the political nonsense to deal with, and over the past year this Covid has turned things upside down for a lot of people, but for those who accept the majority of evidence and follow the recommended guidelines, this pandemic has been little more than a "nuisance".

It has been my experience that the vast majority of people create their own "life" and "love".

But the question was does your country love you? Or even value you?

I basically feel the same way as HazyDavey and SeaBreeze, but it is hard for me to see the Country as a really United entity any more. Even before the PD, I felt like I saw cracks in the entity, less of “agreeing to disagree” and work together for the Common Good, and less agreement on what the common good is any more.

But the question was does your country love you? Or even value you?
In the UK our parliament, or members of it fifty or so years ago, used to talk about our great A.N.W.Pugin and Charles Berry designed Houses of Parliament "Had its face to the river, and its back to the mob", (you and I therefore could be classified as "the mob", though I'm fairly confident neither of us deserves the description, even if others do)!

This then is what its about, but having said that I know the wife of Sir Winston Churchill, at the height of WWII wrote to him showing concern that he had been speaking roughly towards civil servants or other government employees, telling him she could not bear to think that they did not "love him", (the historian relating this story making the point he could not envisage the leaders of our adversaries being similarly admonished).

As a Canadian I totally dispute your perception of Canada.
I've heard this from Canadians themselves. It's a beautiful country but many are not happy at all with what is happening there presently.
