Dog behaviors and humping..

Most of us have seen dogs inappropriately mounting something, but why do dogs hump a certain person in particular?

This behavior is often embarrassing and maddening for everyone concerned and can be problematic during social gatherings.

Just yesterday while I was at a persons home, friends dropped in, and bringing their pet.
Their dog found my leg interesting, and so the humping began.

No big deal BUT, I had to ask the owner to call off their dog, and so they did.

Anything about this topic is welcome...

It happens for many reasons. Maybe the dog felt threatened by your leg ;)
My boy dog has on occasion tried to hump my leg.
Unfortunately no one was around to call him off. Shoot

All kidding aside, it's VERY inconsiderate for a pet owner to allow that or fail to correct the behavior in a social setting.

The dog could have felt stressed, anxious or uncomfortable around a stranger or guest, performing play initiation or a dominance thing.
No matter the reason for the behavior, it's unacceptable under the circumstances.
Weird thing is some female dogs will also exhibit the behavior at times.
My girl dog, the Sugary One would sometimes hump the boy dog and he would look at her like she was ca-razy.

You did the right thing to address the situation with the pet owners ... which should have been unnecessary.

The dog wouldn't do that if he was neutered.

Murrmurr ... my dog was neutered when he was 8. Only because he had a tumor removal that required neuter in order to get good margins. 5yrs later and Mason is almost 13 now and humps as much as he ever did. I think that's because there are more reasons for the behavior than purely procreation activities. And as mentioned, female dogs will sometimes do it too. My female dog that lived to see 15yrs, was spayed as a pup before her first heat, and did it on occasion ... to other dogs.

I probably should have used the word Probably or Maybe or Generally.

I had two male cats that did that, to me only. One cat would "date" a particular one of my sweaters on a regular basis, and of course he was neutered.

At a friend's house, their dog, Puddles, started to hump my husband's leg. Later, I realized Puddles no longer did. I asked my husband about it, and he told me the answer but I'm not telling any of you as I don't want you to be mad at him. I'm mad at him, that's enough!

My dog (spayed female dachshund,) goes to bed when I do and this is her routine: I get in bed and turn on the light to read for a bit. She jumps in bed, humps my arm for about thirty seconds, then goes to her pillow next to mine, scratches it for a few minutes, then lies down on it and sleeps until I turn off the light. Then I turn on my side and she tunnels under the overs and sleeps behind my knees all night.

My brother used to feed a few stray cats in his garage every morning. His Corgi would go out with him and hump all the cats. They all just looked bored as it happened.

????

My sister had two lab-golden laddies who were neutered. The older one would always vigorously hump the other one the minute anyone would walk into the house. It was hilarious.....ding-dong, the door would open and the floor show would begin.

If there was a party going on, the floor show was repeated with every guest.

It was dominance, pure and simple, showing everyone who was the Head Dog of This House.

Wolves do it, too. The pack leader will show dominance by mounting the subordinate males. Don't like it? Go start your own pack, bucko!

Oddly, it happened again today, a dog deciding to hump my arm while I was
sitting at some ones home. My hunch is that it's a newer lotion I am wearing
lately....got to be THAT. ;)

As a farmer I was working in the yards with some animals, my cousin and his dog stopped in passing for a chat. The chat was interrupted by the 2 sheepdogs fighting. My dog won the fight and then started humping my cousin's dog. It was a clear and hilarious way to say Phar Queue...
