Don't call 911 here in Houston

Been up all night. we have been asked not to call 911 unless its a dire emergency as they are swamped with calls. A few inches of water in house is not an emergency which I agree with. Instead of going into attic get on the roof for rescue. Hobby Airport is closed, Bush Airport to follow suit. Bayous are over banks. One woman got out of her car and was found floating in water. We have had 18 inches on my street. It has slowed down a little here at my house and no water yet at door. Daughter is 3 miles away. She has power but her neighbors across the street do not. She has a little water dripping from attic. The freeways are closed and people trapped there are sleeping in their cars. Some people have gone into attic and cannot get back out so they are saying get on the roof for rescue. Say a prayer for us, please if you believe. They are saying we might get a break this afternoon but to start again tonight. At least I have power.
 

Terry hopefully you'll stay dry and your home won't suffer any damage.......I'm going to call my ex in Houston this morning and see how her and her current are weathering the storm.
 
Terry, just know we are all very concerned for you. The good news is that you and your family are okay and that you have power, but I know so many do not. What a nightmare and please keep us updated.
 
I just heard from Ina, and she has also been up all night. She says her power is on and off intermittently; but she has a gas stove and can still cook. She said the water is up to her door, but not inside her house. She has been cooking extra food to help the people who do not have power and no way to cook food.
Thankfully, her whole neighborhood seems to be working together to make sure everyone is safe; but please keep Ina in your prayers, too.
She lives near Green's Bayou, and the river chart shows that it is almost 10' above flood stage right now.

Ina said that she will probably not have time to be on the forum to let people know how she is doing, so I will try to keep everyone updated as I hear from her.
 
Stay strong, Terry!!!! There WILL be a rainbow soon. These natural disasters can wreck havoc on our patience, nerves, and faith. Hopefully, the loss of life is minimal. Material things can be replaced.
 
My thoughts are with you Terry, I hope your home can escape damage from the flooding. My heart goes out to all who are dealing with this hurricane. Happyflowerlady, thanks for letting us know about Ina, hope all can stay safe and get through this.

I just talked to the ex.

They haven't had power since yesterday but luckily her house sits on a small knoll and water has not yet entered her house while those around her have already flooded inside.

She said that water did come within 4' of the door last night and she's understandably worried about two or three more days of heavy rain.......her kitchen range is elect. so they've been cooking meals on a propane grill under the carport.
 
Thanks everybody. Power was off about an hour but back on now. I plan on staying home as I don't need anything and wait it out. It has started back raining again. My brother who is a policeman in Miami told me if I have to call 911 to tell them my medical issues so they can put me on the priority list. The medical center is having problems now. MD Anderson is having flooding on the first floor. Thanks again for your prayers.

I don't know what part of Houston you are in Terry, but all my best to you, and getting that help. 911 has got to be jammed up beyond belief!

I'm on the fringes of the area out northwest of Houston. It's rained off and on for 2 days now, and we've had 26"... but all manageable, no flooding in this immediate area. I haven't been out on any roads.
The pop-up tornados that keep coming (around 120 at last count) are all but being ignored by a lot of people now. Just too much being thrown out there to take in ... information overload I guess.
Power has been on and off several times in my home since yesterday. It doesn't stay off for too long when it does go out though.

I'm getting my weather news from local TV coverage, and it seems like the moving parts of this system keep changing. The city will pretty much be shut down for the entire week ... no schools, and I heard them say that they are evacuating large hospitals in the city. (like Ben Taub). That is shocking to me. It's not a good time to be sick or in need of medical attention.
