Downton Abbey (movie)

I used to watch the series, but after one of my favorite characters was attacked in Season 4.,I stopped watching. The show in my opinion became a 'soap opera',with too many characters & storylines to follow
The movie was # 1 at the boxoffice last weekend with $ 31 mil
BTW: the actress who plays Violet's cousin in the movie,Imelda Stanton, in real life is married to Jim Carter who plays'Mr Carson". I recognized her from Harry Potter movies

I enjoyed the movie immensely. I'd give it about a 4, Radish. The costumes and the interior furnishings were magnificent, and I thought the acting was uniformly excellent. Nearly all of the old cast were there; it was like attending a school reunion where nearly the whole class showed up!

Some changes stood out, such as Thomas beginning to come "out of the closet," and Lady Mary seemed a lot more human and likeable than in the earlier days. Even Mr. Carson relented a bit in his stubborn clinging to the old ways of doing things, probably due to the humanizing influence of Mrs. Hughes (now Mrs. Carson). Bates and Anna had smaller parts than in the original series, but at least they were there.

My favorite character, Violet, was still herself, glad to say, with a lovely twist at the end.

Absolutely see the movie. And jujube, see if you can find the series on TV. Even if you know how it all "comes out," if you liked the movie, you'll enjoy it.

Thanks Sunny. Good to know Lady Mary thawed out a little!

I’ve watched a few episodes of the tv show but somehow just couldn’t warm to it. To me the characters & plot just seemed kind of shallow & stereotyped, So I wont be going to the movie. In contrast, I really enjoyed Upstairs, Downstairs if anyone remembers that.

I will pass this to my wife as she was a big fan of the TV series. She plans on going to see it and will probably put our Bichon, Lilly, into her doggie stroller and take her with her. Lilly has been known to enjoy a good movie, but this will her first trip to an actual theater. I think I will sit this one out.

I went to see it yesterday and was blown away! I watched the entire series on PBS a few years ago so I knew all of the characters. But I was curious as to how they would write a screen play to follow on, but, blimey if they didn't come up with something to top it all. I came away so nostalgic that I started to watch the whole series again on Prime! What a quality production.

I'm a big Downton fan, but yes, Upstairs, Downstairs is what really got us hooked on Brit TV. I assume you're talking about the original.

I saw the movie this weekend and loved it! I have the entire TV series on DVD and have loaned them to many of my friends. (My daughters presented the set to me for a birthday present). When the talk first started about a movie, Maggie Smith said she wouldn't be in it so I made no plans to see it....then she decided she would....thank goodness! She is the best!

I didn't like Violet in the beginning, but after her granddaughter died and Violet became friends with her cousin, they softened the character quite a bit and I started liking her.

I am now the proud (temporary) owner of a complete set of the series (my sister gave them to me on a long-term loan). This winter, when the temperature gets down below 60, I plan to put on my plastic tiara, make myself a cup of Earl Grey or perhaps some consommé, and binge watch.

I think Violet is a priceless character, probably mainly due to Maggie Smith's dry, witty acting. (But Violet always gets the best zingers, also.) I can't imagine this movie without her in it; it would have been a lot less fun.
