Dusting; is it really worth it?

I have a theory that when I dust, the dust all gathers behind me, ready to leap somewhere else when I am not looking.

Do I therefore dust everyday ; no; every week; yes, but why?

It still comes back, daily or weekly...so how much can I ignore it?

If I move it all before I go to my son's on Sunday; it will all come back with me on Tuesday....so why do I bother?

To avoid that, we'd have to live in some sort of a sealed chamber with plenty of filters built in.

I still don't understand where cob webs come from. Anybody know?

Cobwebs supposedly come from spiders.....but I don't believe that.
i believe they grow overnight, just before somebody visits; just to embarrass me....

Jen, I don't even dust once a week, I wait until I feel it really needs to be dusted again. We live with an open field behind us, and when it's windy, a lot of dust is blown around. My house is always dusty. When the light shines on my end table, next to the dog chair, it looks like I have a third furkid, lol. I don't know if it's the orange oil or Pledge cleaner I use, but it seems to attract as much cat and dog hair as possible. It doesn't even wipe off easily with a dust rag.

As far as cobwebs, we have them too, and a lot of spiders. Areas where you frequently get cobwebs can be sprayed with a white vinegar and water solution, that seem to drive the spiders away, for awhile anyway.

No, you're not alone Jen. :) If someone's coming over, I'll give a quick dust in the rooms they'll be in. In my basement, which is finished, but we hardly ever go there, I dust a couple of times a year. Life's too short for too much housework. :playful:

Ok Ladies, now you've got me dusting. I put an old fuzzy sock on my right hand, (I'm a Lefty), and as I move around I swipe at everything I can reach. At least most things are below four feet. I do have a question though. This Log cabin is well over 100 years old, And when it rains or the humidity gets real heavy, this old place gets a moldy smell. Any ideas on what I can do to minimize the issue. I keep the attics clear of all stuff, and we have critter proofed it. All help welcome.

Is it just a mouldy smell; or do you get any real mould?

It is just the smell, no mold, and over the last 25 years, I have kept looking for it. The smell only occurs with high humidity, or over a few rainy days. Hubby says it's because the cabin is so old. I tell him that many houses up North are much older, and I haven't heard of that being a problem.

This may sound odd; but you may find washing down the odd wall with diluted vinegar may help.....you could try a little....

I used to teach my cleaning crews how to dust - start from the top and work your way down. Otherwise you're just making things worse.

And unless y'all plan on stopping skin cells and living in a sealed room you're always going to have dust, so don't sweat it. There are far more important things in life to attend to.

Ina, do you have a basement or a crawl space? Is it finished? That's most likely the source of your mold odor ... I've known people that owned log houses, old ones, and they ended up venting the crawl space - it seemed to help quite a bit.

Thanks Viv, It was worth a shot. The only thing else I can think of is maybe who ever had the the cabin before us didn't raise it on tall enough piers. In 1999, we spent a small fortune raising and leveling the cabin. Leveled the cabin, but we still have the smell. Hubby says he can't smell unless I point it out.

Why can't any of you spell mould?!
