Earthquake in NJ: 'I Thought a Car Hit the Garage'

It had a magnitude of 3.1

In what the AP calls a "rare occurrence," an earthquake struck New Jersey in the early hours of Wednesday. The magnitude 3.1 temblor struck in East Freehold around 2am, per the US Geological Survey. The AP spoke with USGS geophysicist Robert Sanders, who gives the quake some historical context: He says that since 1970, two other quakes have struck within 10 miles of the location, a 3.5 in 1979 and a 3.1 in 1992.

I didn't have the TV on today.. I live down the shore...never heard it...or maybe I was sleeping...Yes, I lived in NJ most of
my life and there are quakes here...But not much damage...

I was up that night and felt nothing. I was surprised when I read that it was felt in Brooklyn N.Y. My son told me that Brooklyn is actually south of where I live and I never realized that. I remember a few years back there was a minor quake west of us.

3.1 is very mild. When I lived in Washington state, we had several in the 4's and 5's, and one famous one which was 6.1. Everything flew off the shelves of the stores, and there was lots of damage.
