It's that time again!
My son has Down's Syndrome, he knows every birthday in the family and every holiday in the year. He moved into a group home when he was 22, and carefully keeps track of every celebration. On March 1st he starts asking do I have something green, don't forget to wear green mom. You'll get pinched if you don't wear green
and when do I get my Easter basket? Lol. It's March son, Easter baskets come in April. I know mom. You wear green, then you get Easter baskets. Are we getting Easter baskets this year? Don"t you always get an Easter basket? Yes, but are we getting Easter baskets this year? Yes. When? When it's April.
I buy Easter baskets for my son and his two roommates every year. Before I started buying his roommates baskets, they didn't get them. They all look forward to their baskets. They also didn't get Easter dinner before I started to provide it. They get to choose what they have for dinner. The aides make a list.
Now my son goes shopping with me for that dinner. Ham. Not that one mom it's to thick, hard to cut. Hmm. He looks through all the pre cooked ready to slice hams at the big box store. This one, he says. Let's get potatoes-mashed, mashed sweet potatoes, potato salad, and sliced red potatoes. Everything oven ready.
Oh, mom, can we have those potatoes too? He points to a large bag of raw potatoes. He explains they make them into fries. Yup, they love their potatoes and we get the bag. Sliced fresh fruit goes into basket. Biscuits, a large tub of butter, jam, and soda. Two pies-Apple and one other. Can you eat all that pie, son? Yup.
We leave and go to the grocery store for the things the big box store doesn't have. Macaroni salad and such. Once he is satisfied we head for his house. The Easter dinner is for everyone-the "boys" and the staff. I realized long ago that many of the staff don't have holiday dinners either. It's not a high salary job.
Are we getting Easter baskets this year mom? Yes. Are we getting dinner too? Yes. The questions come until the day of the feast. The Easter baskets sell out at early at the big box store. I bought them yesterday. The Friday before the feast, we will fight the crowds and buy the dinner.
Are we having our family feast mom? Oh, yeah, we host the entire family, once a month, at our house. 12 to 15 people show up. Yes, son, we are having the family feast too.
. As usual. I can hardly wait-for it to be over. When do we get the Easter baskets mom? LOL.
