Eddie Van Halen, famous rock guitarist dead from cancer at age of o65. Smoking tobacco is a scourge on society. The dealers of that have to feel some responsibility. I know it was his choice to use but once they hook you it is near impossible to quit. I knew a friend who smoked whose father died of throat cancer. My friend eventually got throat cancer and died. The sad part is that his son smokes.

Not really a fan but ......to young R.I.P.

I have lost two friends to cancer @ 60 & 69...

They will never 'find' a cure .......... it is just too big of a business.

Just like others, like Patrick Swayze, Eddie couldn't/wouldn't quit the cigarettes.

There are those that wouldn't like Van Halen's songs, due to sounding too Heavy Metal-Hard Rock. We have, and play, some of their songs. My wife loves their version of the Kinks song, You Really Got Me. But, when David Lee Roth, Lead Singer, left the band, that was the end of Van Halen for us.

I know I'm getting old when the musicians I grew up listening to are dying. very sad. First Neil Peart in January, now Eddie. He was a heavy smoker.

We are at an age when our contemporaries are passing away. You notice a trend in reviewing their lives, and that is they were the cause of most of their own problems. We see the effects of things like drug abuse, inability to form lasting relationships, etc. It's so apparent. Why didn't they notice it? And then, the question becomes, what in our own lives don't we see,, or admit? I guess that's why the passing of our heroes hurts so much.

I wasn't a fan but I certainly knew who he was and that he was deserving of the accolades. I was surprised when I found out the rock legend who had passed that David Muir spoke of at the top of his program was Van Halen! We've lost a lot of important people in the music industry in the last month! May he R.I.P.

I was surprised to read this article about Van Halen being the victim of racism while living in the Netherlands! His mother was Indonesian and he and his brother were referred to as "half breeds". The racism got so bad they actually had to leave the country but still had a hard time when first arriving in America because they didn't speak English well and their living situation wasn't the best.

they put all these addictive chemicals in the cigarettes making quitting very difficult. we know it causes cancer and kills people yet their still legal. $$$$$

You wouldn't be surprised at European racism if you look at their colonization efforts.
The racism which is global wasn't as much of a surprise as learning that he was (considered) mixed race. Van Halen's experience seems to be the opposite of Slash from Guns & Roses. Slash is mixed and mused (from Wikipedia) "As a musician, I've always been amused that I'm both British and black; particularly because so many American musicians seem to aspire to be British while so many British musicians, in the 'Sixties in particular, went to such great pains to be black."[16]
