Election Day at last in America…

You can tell I'm old, because I can honestly remember when politicians referred to their opposition as "My distinguished opponent," or some such term. If they lost, they declared themselves to be members of "the loyal opposition." I miss those classier days...politics doesn't have to be a to-the-death bloodbath!

Alabama has no early voting and you have to jump through hoops and have all kinds of justification to get an absentee ballot so I voted this morning around 9:30 to avoid the before work rush. Got in and out in 10 minutes. It's a forgone conclusion who will get this deep red state's electoral votes but for the first time since I moved here 10 years ago my congressional district is considered competitive due to redrawing of the district boundaries. As usual I filled in only one oval on my ballot because Alabama has a straight ticket option. You can probably guess which one I filled in.

About noon read all the election postal mailings for first time. Then in pleasant 71F temps, walked a half mile to the polling place only to at 1:15pm find a 200 foot long line out the door of probably mostly working folks that expected to get their voting done during their lunch breaks.

Uhhhh No. David walked back home and will drive his car back there in a few hours. So just mic'd a half package of Knorr Rice Sides broccoli cheese rice that just finished.

I don't think I've ever voted straight ticket. I keep the mailed and door hanging stuff until the end and spend the last week poring over it all. But we also have a lot of "non-partisan" (hah!) posts, proposals, and tax millage requests.

My ballot was received on 10/30. It took me awhile to fill out the ballot because Arizona had 13 propositions this year. Plus there was the normal long list of judges to vote on whether to retain or not. I'm glad I voted at home. I would have felt rushed if I had waited to vote at my local election site.

It begins. The polls are closing.
I am dreading it. I normally would curl up with a good book and just avoid all the hoopla, but I was sick earlier and have to stay up late.

And my older daughter just texted: Her water broke, so she and her husband are in the hospital in the eastern part of the state, waiting for the birth of their twins.

So I won't be getting a lot of sleep tonight. I had hoped, though, to shut down all electronics. At least I can avoid the TV.

My grandmother worked the polls when I was a kid. I worked the polls the last two elections but my post surgery crap kept me from this one. I enjoyed doing it. My son voted in his first presidential election today. I voted early. Its easy in my county. Im glad so many voted early as it allows the ones that have to vote today less long lines.

As I write this, millions are voting. I propose a new law. If anyone even mentions elections, polls, or voting in the next 4 years, they will be dragged out, drowned, burnt, chopped, diced and julienned.

I have found it greatly entertaining and terribly interesting as some wealthy supposedly intelligent adults act like five year old children let loose in a zoo for the day; and reduce themselves to raving idiots.

While others line up to assure the world that the adults are in the room. Not to mention, newscasters, who should be impartial, line up against or for one candidate or another, giving opinions that should be kept to themselves.

The battleground states are at the full front of the process as if the rest of us don’t exist and could just stay home and not vote Cause no one cares. 😂. And the world waits as the USA once again decides its fate, and drags the rest of the world into its craziness.

😂. It all replays itself in 4 years. Everyone should just relax, drink a beer, eat some ice cream, and watch the fun. Whoever wins, only has, as I said, 4 years to screw stuff up. Then we change again. And the next administration screws it back.

And thankfully, we always have a peaceful transition of power.

We vote with human readable paper ballots. They are counted by machine, but the marks are clearly readable and obvious to a human. In the event of a very close race, the last resort is a human count of the votes. Whomever requests the human count pays for it. If the human count reverses the machine count, they get their money back.

All states count. As do all votes. In my home state we had a governor’s race decided by 133 votes.

ok...thanks..lol I am not saying anything, because I don't want this to turn into a politcal thread..
I truly do not care who wins, or becomes president except for the like personally/ dislike factor. I have not voted in a couple decades. The presidency has become weaker and weaker over the years. Our congress is often deadlocked. I have no passion for any of it.

So I can relax, enjoy the show and know it makes no difference at all to my personal life. I can assure everyone that at the age of 78 I will not need an abortion, i don't work so I don’t have to suck up to anyone, my social security is regulated by law, I don’t get a lot of money so a tax cut or raise won’t change my income tax bracket, and the Supreme Court should remove the stick, but even if they don’t it does not matter to me.

I am no longer political, lots of Americans aren’t , both young and old. It will be what it will be and half of us will wake up tomorrow, say “bummer”, and get on with life.
