Embarrassing Moment

I went to shop for groceries this AM and found myself short on cash. I thought I had a lot more money than I did and ended up having to put back 4 items. This usually doesn't happen to me, and not having a credit card, I couldn't use an ATM. It will be July 2 before I get my pension check, too. I suppose in an emergency I could write myself a check, but my bullet point is that I let myself get low and didn't realize it.

Doesn't make sense to me to write a check to yourself when you could have written a check for all of the purchases instead of putting the items back.

But it really seems strange to me not having at least one cash back credit card. Using a cash back card makes it possible to consolidate purchase cost, then paying the balance completely so you don't incur interest while getting cash back for what you spend is better money management.

Ditto.. I use the CC for large $$$ purchases and online buying..

I usually figure out a rough idea of my purchase before I get to the register, in supermarkets I usually pay with a check. Couldn't you use your check to pay the bill Deb? I suggest you get at least one credit card, there are some with no annual fees and if you pay off your monthly balance in full, there's no interest charges. That way you can also buy something you want or need online with no hassle.

Wow! Folks still using cash and checks! I carry my trusty credit card, at all times, and always pay it off, in full, each month. Sorry, no disrespect intended, but I can't imagine why anyone would still be writing checks, and/or using cash, for purchases above $5, or so.

Just a personal preference Treeguy, I still like to use checks for simple supermarket purchases, today I picked up a pint of excellent salsa from a Mexican restaurant by us with cash, they won't take credit cards or checks for a $6 purchase. We always pay off our credit cards in full also and use them for vacation, gas/fuel, larger purchases or online purchases.

Wife and I are more of the "modern family" in that we mainly use CC for everything. I get a little shocked when I see someone paying for something with cash or a check. But, do understand that some people can't have a CC due to bad credit, owe State or Gov taxes or simply don't want one. Always, always paid in cash and got my weekly job pay in a check that I would cash at the company's bank. Would always carry cash on me and pay for everything in cash. For awhile, back in the 90's, did owe State and Federal taxes, so couldn't have a banking account. Wife and I took care of my owed taxes and have no problem today having a joint/married banking account.

After wife and I bought our house in Colorado, everyone wanted to give us a CC and we got quite a few. Back then, and even today, all vacations are put on CC's.

About the only thing I pay cash for is a haircut. I carry very little cash. My checkbook never leaves the house.

Hummmm. I thought you were wealthy:laugh:
I know you aren’t seeking answers or solutions but it actually pays to have a good credit card if you pay it each and every month. We get a cheque for 2.5% from everything we purchase with our card.

If you don’t want a card then perhaps make a check list of the items you need along with the price BEFORE you go out.

I have money in the bank, but that doesn't do me much good when I need it at the store. It's just that I didn't realize how low my petty cash was getting. I replenished my wallet from my garage sale cash box when I got home. I hope it will be enough until my pension check arrives on July 2nd. And yes, I still receive a paper check from my pension. That way I'm free to deposit it in whatever bank I choose, or just cash it and keep t as spending money. No way to get around the SSI, that is obligatory direct deposit.

Hey Tree Guy,I'm in the minority here,I always pay cash for my groceries never by ck,prefer it that way
I only have 1 credit card, every month I pay it off in full. I only use it if I'm buy something on Amazon.I pay all my bills by ck,never online, since twice in the past 30 yrs, I've dealt with identity theft Sue

I prefer cash too.

I use my credit card to purchase gas at the pump, online items, and large purchases.

I divide the cash that I carry between my working cash and my stash. When my working cash is low I borrow from my stash.

IMO cash is more convenient than many of those new chip cards and I don't have to worry about writing a check at the end of the month.:playful:

I find using the one credit card even more convenient than using cash and with 2 1/2 percent rebate it works out great.

The only thing is that I have to be extra disciplined to use it otherwise I can overspent.

For smaller items I use a debit card for automatic withdrawal

There have been times in my life that I’ve had to put some items back debodun. I’ve just laughed it off. It happens,

I just hope you have enough food in the house so you don't go hungry.

Debodun will be fine. Upthread she said she has money in the bank.

She has said several times on the forum that her yearly income is in the range of $70,000....and she's currently shopping for a new car. :)
